    Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at University of Detroit Mercy in the College of Engineering & Science invites candidates to apply for a full-time tenure track faculty position with a specialty in Organic Chemistry, broadly defined. The candidate hired will start August 16, 2024. Detroit Mercy is dedicated to the goal of building a diverse and inclusive academic community. We strongly encourage applications from candidates who can demonstrate through their teaching, research, experience, and service that they can contribute to this goal.

Due to the ongoing, increasing needs to offer more sections of 1000- and 2000-level courses in our Department, we request the chance to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry with a specialty area in Chemical Education (often termed a "CER," which stands for chemical education researcher). Based on a standard timetable for this search of August 23 to February 24, we are also requesting a one (1) year lecturer to bridge the need for full-time faculty during the 23-24 academic year. Given the significant teaching needs in Chemistry, we are requesting permission to hire an Instructor while this search proceeds.

There are 10-14 sections of courses representing 355 (Fall 23) and 430 (Winter 24) enrollments for which instructors are needed. Four (4) sections each from F23 and W24 will be assigned to our new Department Lecturer to be hired in March 2023. As it stands right now, all remaining sections would be taught by adjunct faculty, each of which are only able to teach a maximum of 2 sections. We constantly advertise for adjuncts, but high-quality adjuncts for these high-stakes courses (many first-term freshmen) who can teach day courses have been difficult to find. Some full-time faculty will take on overload, but that impacts time for research, service, student orgs, etc.

The impact of a tenure-track CER professor cannot be underestimated, as this individual would be flexible enough to teach general and organic courses (among other, higher-level courses), and would be a grant proposal revenue stream that directly coincides with teaching duties.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching responsibilities will include organic chemistry lecture and laboratory courses and potentially other courses based on area of expertise that complement or expand current offerings in the department.
