Create a Job Alert for Similar Jobs About Tulane University Tulane University New Orleans in was one of the busiest international port cities in the world. But the city wasn't just importing goods from across the world, they were also importing deadly diseases like yellow fever, malaria and smallpox. In an effort to treat these diseases, learn more about them and train more doctors, the Medical College of Louisiana was formed. By , the Medical College of Louisiana was a newly established public institution, the University of Louisiana. But in , wealthy merchant Paul Tulane, a native of Princeton, N.J., wanted to express his appreciation for the city that made him his fortune. He donated more than $1 million in land, cash and securities "for the promotion and encouragement of intellectual, moral and industrial education." His generous gift transformed the University of Louisiana into Tulane University. In , the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College was established as Tulane's co-ordinate college for women. More than years later, Tulane University has become one of the most respected educational and research institutions in the country. Tulane is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, a group of the 62 leading research universities in the United States and Canada with "preeminent programs of graduate and professional education and scholarly research." Tulane also is ranked by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a university with "very high research activity." Of more than 4, higher educational institutions rated by the foundation, Tulane remains in a prestigious category that includes only two percent of universities nationwide.? In July, President Mike Fitts was named the 15th President of Tulane. President Fitts has ushered in a new era at Tulane focused on creating the most meaningful student experience anywhere and greatly increasing and deepening the university's level of interdisciplinary teaching and research. His efforts are quickly establishing Tulane as a place where the best minds from the widest array of fields seek solutions to the world's most pressing problems through cross-disciplinary collaboration and innovation. Tulane University Athletics The athletic department features 17 sports (football, men's/women's basketball, men's/women's cross country, volleyball, bowling, women's golf, beach volleyball, men's/women's indoor/outdoor track & field, baseball, men's/women's tennis and sailing). The athletic department has been a proud member of the American Athletic Conference for the last 11 years. Green Wave football won its second-ever AAC Championship, and its third football conference championship of any kind since in . The Green Wave also won back-to-back conference titles for the first time since the early s. The Green Wave's cross country program had a fantastic fall. The Tulane women won the AAC team competition, and the men finished third. Both teams took part in the NCAA's South Central Regional, where the men finished third and the women took fourth (best in program history). Due to the team's success, coaches Adrian Myers and David Silversmith were named the league's Coaching Staff of the Year. Seven student-athletes earned All-AAC accolades. Men's Basketball also had its fair share of success. Coach Ron Hunter led the Green Wave to its first 20-win regular season since the - season, including 12 conference wins, the most since the -48 season. Kristen O'Handley set the school record in the heptathlon and advanced to both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, where she was an All-American. Men's Tennis qualified for the NCAA Tournament again this season, the sixth time in seven seasons under Coach Mark Booras. Beach Volleyball finished its season with a program-best #18 ranking in the AVCA rankings, with a 24-10 record in its first season as a member of Conference USA. Green Wave Baseball concluded a strong competitive year, winning our first AAC championship, the 16th conference championship in the storied history of the program. The AAC championship led to Tulane's return to the NCAA Regionals for the first time since . But this year has had as much to boast about off the field of competition as on the field. Our student-athletes ranked #2 in the nation in community service hours this year. This is the seventh consecutive year we have been in the Top 25 nationally, showcasing that our commitment to serve others is the foundation of the Tulane experience. Due to the generous contributions of Jill and Avram Glazer, our department was able to provide its first study-abroad program for rising juniors. Last May, nearly 70 of our student-athletes traveled to Australia, where they earned three credit hours through classroom time, experiential learning, and exploration of the world of sports in Australia. Among their many adventures included a chance to swim the Great Barrier Reef. The study-abroad program will continue next year, with South Africa as the probable destination. Academically, Tulane continued to set a standard of success, with 68% of our student-athletes earning at least a 3.0 GPA, seven teams earning a perfect Academic Progress Rate, and a department Graduation Success Rate of 93%. The past year also marked the most significant capital improvements for Tulane Athletics since Yulman Stadium was built. Investment in Tulane Athletics and our student-athletes elevates us as an institution and, as the investment in Yulman Stadium proved, can be a catalyst for success of our programs. This fall, the Olive and Blue's Swimming and Diving team competed in the newly-renovated Reily Center Natatorium, as the nearly $13 million three-year renovation came to an end. Construction on a new multi-million dollar six-court tennis facility for Men's and Women's Tennis is about to commence. An $8 million renovation is underway in the Wilson Center to expand and upgrade the locker rooms, common spaces and athletic training facilities. The renovation will also add new water modalities for rehabilitation and injury prevention. Tulane's next facilities investment will focus on constructing an on-campus indoor practice space for our football, track and field, and golf programs. Additional phases of this space will include more locker rooms and meeting spaces, additional sports medicine, injury prevention and rehabilitation spaces, as well as a larger strength room.
