Seasonal Assistant
-Land Management


DEPARTMENT:
Conservation Department


FLSA STATUS:
Hourly, Non-Exempt - (not benefit eligible)


POSITION GRADE:
Personnel Policies/Plan (non-union), Schedule B


LOCATION:
Duxbury Town Hall - Lands & Conservation locations


HOURS:15 hours per week


SCHEDULE:
variable days, flexibility as needed


SALARY:
Starts at $15.00 hr. (actual salary dependent on experience)

Nature of Work:

Preforms physical labor associated with the management of town-owned open space and trails, under the direction of the Town of Duxbury, Conservation Administrator.

The employee acts as the Conservation Department ambassador when interacting with the public and others on behalf of the Town of Duxbury, when communicating departmental practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines as needed.


Supervision Received:

Works under the supervision of an employee of the Conservation Administrator who assigns work, reviews performance for skill and efficiency and assists in cases of difficulty.

Conservation Agent resolves complaints, issues or concerns of the public.


Supervisory Responsibility:
No supervisory duties.


Confidentiality:
Employee may have access to confidential information of the department. Confidentiality must be maintained with regard to this information in accordance with Department Policy and the Public Records Act.

Accountability:

Consequences, errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include adverse public relations, monetary loss, legal repercussions, labor/material costs, personal injury, jeopardize programs, and danger to public health/safety.


Judgment:
Guidelines may be given verbally, or through administrative or organizational policies, or directives. Employee is expected to weigh efficiency and relative priorities in performing tasks.


  • Nature and Purpose of

Public Contact:
Employee interacts frequently with the public and Town employees. Excellent customer service skills are required involving more than ordinary courtesy, tact, and diplomacy. When receiving complaints or concerns of the public the employee will escalate to the Conservation Administrator.

Essential Functions:

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed.

  • Work independently with little supervision
  • Travel by foot, mountain bike, all terrain, or truck through rough terrain
  • Use knowledge and skill in the operation of power equipment and hand tools (i.e., chain saw, hammer, power tools, generator, power lawn mower, power string trimmer, chain saw)
  • Performs tasks related to the construction and maintenance of walking trails
  • Must read maps
  • Install and maintain signs and directional markers
  • Cut and remove trees, branches and brush,
  • Pick up litter and trash
  • Install and maintain split rail fencing
  • Dig holes 34 feet deep
  • Painting and woodworking
  • Must be able to lift approximately 50 pounds
  • Climb ladders up to 10 feet high
  • Construct and maintain wildlife structures and nesting facilities.
  • Occasionally some office work involved, including; copying, filing and writing reports
  • Cross trains with other Town employees for skill and safety
  • Is available for call backs in the event of emergencies.
  • Create brochures and maps for distribution
  • Recommended Minimum Qualification

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or equivalent; Ability to perform manual labor under varying climatic conditions, experience interacting with the public; experience in the proper use of power and hand tools; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential function of the position.


Special Requirements:
Valid Driver's License.


Knowledge, Abilities and Skill:

  • Knowledge of the operation of necessary equipment and tools used in the performance of assigned work.
  • Ability to deal effectively, tactfully and diplomatically with fellow employees, supervisors, and the general public.

Work Environment:

The nature of duties may involve continuous presence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as insects, noise, odors, dust, smoke, heat, cold, water, wet conditions or dirt.

Work is performed primarily outdoors at times during inclement weather.

Occupational Risks:

Duties regularly present potential risks of injuries from improper exposure that could result in loss of time from work.

Examples of injuries, muscular strains, and falls from heights in excess of three (3) feet. Special safety precautions, training, or protective clothing such as chaps, gloves, glasses, hats, helmets or boots will be required/provided. Including proper safety training in
