Highway Maintainer II

Position Summary/Purpose:


The purposes of this position are to be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of light and heavy-duty vehicles and power equipment on assigned projects or activities of a public services nature which may entail road and sidewalk construction and maintenance; storm water systems maintenance and construction; maintenance of town facility grounds; tree work and road side mowing, etc., as needed.

An individual in this position is also expected to perform many different types of maintenance, mechanical and repair work and manual labor in addition to driving CDL vehicles.

The Highway Maintainer II is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control.

The Highway Maintainer II will always demonstrate professionalism when performing tasks as a representative of the Town of Middlefield.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs manual and machine assisted maintenance, repair and construction work of roads, sidewalks, curbs, storm water systems, catch basins and drainage ditches, etc.
  • Shovels and plows snow and spreads sand and salt on roads, sidewalks, parking lots, steps, etc.
  • Spreads sand, gravel and asphalt; lays asphalt and patches streets; street sweeping; roadside mowing, leaf and brush pick up; assist contractor with catch basin cleaning;
  • Digs and moves materials with hand tools, wheelbarrows, and hand trucks. Loads and unloads heavy materials from vehicles. Assists with stocking operations. Orders parts as needed and approved by Highway Foreman.
  • Operates large heavy equipment for such projects as catch basin repair or construction; storm water drainage repair and construction; digging ditches and laying pipe.
  • Performs town facility grounds maintenances and construction such as: mowing of grass, weeds and brush; maintain and trim plantings and shrubs; rakes and picks up leaves and other debris; clears culverts, drains, roads, ditches, and hydrants; performs trash removal at parks, and other town facilities.
  • Performs heavy labor and various unskilled and semiskilled tasks essential to municipal operations and public service and assisting other departments as needed moving furniture, minor building repairs (light painting & carpentry work), move voting machines, etc. Use a wide variety of power, pneumatic and hand tools.
  • The Highway Department is an essential element of the Town's emergency operations response protocol. The Highway Maintainer II position is required to be available for all emergency operations response situations on an as needed basis.
  • Is required to be available for snow and/or ice related weather conditions from November 1st through April 1st.
  • Operates and checks vehicles, attachments and tools for correct fluid levels, pressures and general operating condition. Maintains, cleans and washes vehicles and equipment and reports problems to the Highway Foreman. Performs basic vehicle mechanical work on heavy equipment and trucks. Maintains and cleans Highway Garage and ensures materials, equipment and supplies are properly stored and maintained in a safe, organized condition.
  • Performs set up and take down labor for numerous townwide events including at, parks, or town facilities.
  • Performs tree trimming and removal of trees as needed using hand saw, limb trimmer, or chain saw.
  • Assists with preparing, maintaining and performing job site and work safety practices. Observes all OSHA requirements on work sites and in Highway Garage. Conducts all work in a safe manner and all work safety practices are followed.
  • Consistent ontime attendance is essential for this position.

Other Functions:


  • Performs similar or related work as may be requested/required, or directed by the First Selectman or the Highway Foreman or as situation dictates.
  • May operate Trailer if employee has a class A CDL license.
  • May set up jobs onsite to determine proper grade, etc.
  • Assists other department staff as needed to promote a team effort to serve the public.
  • Attend training sessions, as required.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

Must have a High School Diploma or GED with 3-5 years of construction and heavy vehicle driving experience; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training:

Must have and maintain:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B minimum with airbrakes endorsement; Tank Endorsement preferred; Must maintain compliance with all CDL "medical status" requirements including the required medical certification; Must submit to CDL Drug testing regulations:
