This administrative/customer service staff position may be the first face of the organization when a patient visits and can have a dramatic impact on making individuals feel welcomed and ease their anxiety by starting their hospital visit professionally.

In addition this position impacts patient safety and clinical care by ensuring the patient identifiers are correct and on reimbursement by collecting accurate insurance information and co-pays.


  • Efficiently registers patients, capturing and verifying all required information in order to identify the patient, contact the patient, and receive proper reimbursement for services on initial claim submission.
  • Ascertains, creates and assigns the guarantor for each patient, including personal/family relations, workers compensation insurance, third parties, behavioral health or others as required.
  • Ensures the integrity of the data in the hospital's information system with respect to patient demographic, insurance and admission information.
  • Identifies, records and verifies patient insurance coverage using real time eligibility (RTE); reviews the insurer's response to each verification request and takes appropriate action based on this response.
  • Completes the Medicare Secondary Payor Questionnaire for each patient and adjusts patient coverage based on results.
  • Places identification bands on patients per procedure.

  • Serves as a resource for patients and others with questions regarding registration, insurance eligibility and patient admission.
  • Instructs patients and obtains electronic signatures on consent forms, financial forms, and other documents required by the clinical department; distributes documents to patients; scans, processes and records receipt of all documents collected during the registration encounter. Explains Health Care Proxy information, answering questions and assisting patients in completing the forms if necessary.
  • Monitor patient waiting area for a smooth, efficient registration flow. Advises patients of potential delays and takes steps to ensure a pleasant patient experience.
  • Counsels patients regarding noncovered services, obtaining signatures on Advance Notice Beneficiaries (ABNs) and waivers.
  • Completes the arrival checkin process for the patient visit encounter.
  • Demonstrates ability to handle difficult situations by using effective problem solving skills.
  • Collaborates with others to ensure a positive and effective patient experience.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast paced environment with constant interruption.
  • At the direction of the Nursing Supervisor, assigns patients to open beds. Acts as a liaison between the floors and the assigning supervisor when there is difficulty in assigning the patient to the intended floor.
  • Audits death certificates. Collaborates with the patient floor and/or physician to correct death certificate information. Copies and logs certificate information into system. Notifies and provides original certificates to Funeral Home and copies to HIM.
  • Utilizes supervisor or manager to resolve issues/concerns as needed.
  • Assists in ensuring adequate departmental coverage when needed. This includes covering in the Admitting, Emergency Room and offsite locations at the direction of the Registration Supervisor.
  • Participates in holiday coverage rotation.
  • Flexible availability to accommodate work coverage requests
  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings.

Education/Experience**
Required

:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Some clerical experience or experience in a healthcare setting.
  • 1 year of completed college may be considered in lieu of relevant experience.

Preferred

:


  • 1 year of admitting or billing preferred
