The University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking an Associate Director in its Undergraduate unit within the Office of Admissions.

This position is responsible for the oversight of activities related to recruitment, admissions and registration for undergraduate students.

This includes direction of the admissions process from point of inquiry through enrollment and enforcement of academic policies as set by the university.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee all phases of admissions including recruitment activities, enrollment planning and strategy, hiring, training and supervision of admissions advisors and credential evaluators and other undergraduate admissions initiatives. Serve as final authority on undergraduate admissions related initiatives.
  • Prepare, maintain and interpret statistical data regarding enrollment, financial aid and attrition. Utilize reports to set immediate priorities and long range goals.
  • Provide strategic management which includes determining and setting unit goals and priorities, and identifying areas of improvement and developing new routines or procedures within undergraduate admissions.
  • Evaluate courses and degrees offered by other schools to determine their equivalency to courses offered on campus. Confer with staff of other schools to explain admission requirements and student transfer credit policies.
  • Maintain student information and permanent academic records.
  • Direct preparation of printed and web materials explaining admission requirements policies for public dissemination and recruitment goals.
  • Conduct regular review of related university policies and procedures to propose modifications, if necessary. Serve on policy making admissions committees.
  • Oversee the evaluation of transcripts and degrees received from other institutions and evaluate transfer credit. Solve difficult and escalated cases.
  • Facilitate training sessions for faculty and/or staff or coordinate training through consultants as needed.
  • Collaborate on and oversee recruitment initiatives, develop and assign staff to territories in order to meet the University's growth goals.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive plans to achieve the university's recruitment, admissions, yield, and retention goals.
  • Direct management, including hiring, training, development and annual reviews of admissions advisors and credential evaluators and assistant directors.
  • Represent Admissions in meetings with colleges, campus support staff, program directors, and deans. Make presentations and answers all questions pertaining to undergraduate admissions.
  • Participate in admissions and other campus search committees.
  • Participate in national conferences and interact with national admissions organizations (AACRAO, NACAC, NAFSA, TAICEP, or similar). Serve on national panels and participate in workshops related to the admissions profession.
  • Write training materials and compose detailed reference guides for undergraduate admissions procedures. Create and maintain documentation related to undergraduate admissions business processes.
  • Coordinate communication between Undergraduate Admissions and campus departments and various internal units; troubleshoot systemic problems and provide analysis and solutions for problems that arise throughout campus.
  • Maintains and ensures compliance with NACAC best practices, Higher Learning Commission requirements, and ethical recruitment standards.
  • Resource for peers in Graduate, Professional, and International Admissions.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree required


A minimum of 7 years' experience dealing with issues related to undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional admissions, recruitment, or student activities.


Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree preferred.

Knowledge of recruitment practices, admissions procedures, and registration functions

Knowledge of relevant legislation, rules, regulations, tools, procedures, technical specifications, and developments pertaining to admissions, information technology, and international education.

Knowledge of college admissions criteria and policies. Must be able to make independent decisions as situations arise.
Knowledge of professional standards, policies and practices of NAFSA, TAICEP, NACAC and AACRAO. High level of organization and attention to detail. Ability to multi-task and to handle cases that require the coordination of multiple campus units in order to reach a resolution
Strong oral and written communication skills with diverse populations.
Experience handling difficult cases and resolving issues with campus staff and prospective applicants. Experience doing research and problem-solving that require critical/analytical thinking and decision-making. Experience training and m
