The Animal Care Volunteer Program is to support the Zoo & Aquarium's animals, employees, and mission.


Responsibilities:

  • Cleaning and general upkeep of animal habitats and surrounding areas
  • Duties may include hosing scrubbing sweeping disinfecting equipment bathrooms kitchens and animal holding areas washing dishes doing laundry taking out trash recycling cleaning glass windows on animal habitats yardwork maintenance as needed supporting daily care well-being of animals assisting with diet prep preparing enrichment for animals assisting with animal observations engaging visitors answer questions about Zoo Aquarium animals other duties or special projects assigned best interest Kansas City Zoo Aquarium specific duties percentages vary slightly between each Animal Care Team volunteers must perform essential functions satisfactorily reasonable accommodations evaluated enable volunteers disabilities undue hardship length appointment position appointed period three months reappointed another three months supervisor discretion yearlong opportunities area needs supervisor approval time commitment shift availability varies team seasonally based team needs average minimum shifts month during appointment qualifications be least years old willing dirty extreme weather sufficient mobility safe work environment complete tasks basic animal safety courses prior background screening negative TB test training provided Area Manager Volunteer Contact available questions assistance dress code neutral colored pants shorts shirt comfortable close-toed shoes weather appropriate outerwear seniority level internship employment type volunteer job function other non-profit organizations
