Duties:


  • Utilize electroencephalographic (EEG) equipment to record brain wave patterns and to identify precise artifacts in the Laboratory and/or in the wards including NICU, PICU, ICU, CCU, the ER, and in the neonatal nursery.
  • Review patients' clinical history for common/complicated medical conditions pertinent to the performance of the procedures and obtains verbal history from patients or families regarding relevant medications, diseases, symptoms, etc.
  • Conduct activation procedures including hyperventilation/photic stimulation used in assessments of cerebral reactivity and sleep; recognizes manifestation of seizure types and performs testing to assess responsiveness during the recording.
  • Instruct and prepares patients for examinations accordingly and records information on EEG according to the standards of the American Society of Electro neurodiagnostic Technology (ASET).
  • Perform long term continuous epilepsy monitoring; conducts various specialized neurological examinations and complex procedures on patients, ranging in age from neonate to geriatric.
  • Perform sensory/motor nerve conduction studies to include evaluation of the median, ulnar, radial, peroneal, tibial, and sural nerves conducting Fwave/Hwave studies, blink reflex studies, repetitive nerve stimulation, and facial nerve studies.
  • Require advanced level of knowledge/skills in EEG pattern recognition and provides results to physicians; recognizes cerebral sources of EEG findings for critical care/medically induced coma patients/patients with advanced neurological conditions.
  • Provide education on EDX techniques for trainees as well as members of the inpatient healthcare team; serves as a preceptor to new employees occasionally conducting inservice training on new procedures or new equipment.

  • This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 45 pounds is required.
  • A preplacement medical examination is required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.

  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic reverification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.

Specialized Experience:One year of specialized experience includes conducting electroencephalograms on patients and performing operator maintenance on electroencephalogram equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education:One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Electroencephalograph (EEG) Technology or Neurodiagnostic Technology.

Combination of Education and Experience:A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.
