Position Summary:

As part of the Food Service Team, you will be responsible for helping provide delicious, fresh, well-balanced meals to our campers & staff and maintain safety standards within the kitchen and dining areas.

A Kitchen Assistant is responsible for assisting the Food Service Manager and Cook in all aspects of kitchen operation.

Kitchen Assistants are responsible for helping prepare meals, serve meals, and maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen and dining areas.


Required Experience, Skills and Qualifications (see full job description for all details):

  • Minimum of 16 years of age (18 years of age and older preferred)
  • Previous experience in food service in a camp or equivalent food service setting.
  • Knowledgeable in food preparation, serving, and kitchen procedures preferred.
  • Loves to interact with children and has 13 years prior experience working with children of various ages.
  • Enjoys spending time outdoors and has prior experience working in an outdoor setting preferred.
  • Good time management, organized and detailed.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Current Food Handlers Certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR. Training is provided by camp prior to the start of employment.

Schedule and Time Off:
Kitchen Assistants may work daily hours and commute at their own expense or reside on site.

  • Kitchen Assistants living onsite will work 56 days a week based on camp session type, with at least one consecutive 24hour break between sessions. Staff living onsite receive lodging and food as part of employment
- they should expect to participate in nighttime camp activities and may be asked to lodge in camper units. Staff living on-site will have a 2 hour break each day with an additional extended evening break per overnight week
- scheduling dependent on program assignment.

  • Commuting Kitchen Assistants can expect to work from 2540 hours a week covering 23 meal services.

Kitchen Assistant Responsibilities:


  • Wash, sanitize, dry, and store all dinnerware, serving dishes and utensils, pots, and pans.
  • Ensure kitchen and food servicing areas are swept regularly and that food prep stations and serving areas are frequently cleaned and sanitized.
  • Mop kitchen floor per kitchen cleaning schedule.
  • Assist campers in the setting of tables, as appropriate.
  • Keep drinking water containers cleaned and filled.
  • Assist in receiving and inspecting food orders, and help store food and other supplies appropriately.
  • Assist in ensuring that kitchen, dining areas, and food storage meets all standards including state and local health laws in areas such as dishwashing, care of leftover food, insect control, and fire safety.
  • Primarily responsible for assisting with preparing and serving meals under the direction of the Cook and/or Food Service Manager.
  • Ensure meals are prepared on time, served at the correct temperature, and in adequate quantity.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all aspects of camp life and act as a role model by maintaining personal hygiene, timeliness, and general friendliness.
  • Express self effectively and appropriately to supervisors and coworkers.
  • Knowledgeable of content of personnel policies, camp staff manual and training materials, attends all staff trainings and meetings, and adheres to council policies and procedures.
  • Assist in preparation of the kitchen and dining areas at the beginning and end of the camp season, including cleaning, supply inventory, and safe storage.
  • Sets a good example for campers and others including but not limited to: cleanliness, punctuality, sharing, cleanup, sportsmanship and table manners.
  • May be asked to assist in other areas of camp as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
