Under the general supervision of the Medical Director and Program Manager, guided by policies and procedures of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and the Office-based Buprenorphine Induction Clinic (OBIC), the Medical Assistant at OBIC will assist licensed nursing and medical staff in front and back-office tasks in the care of patients with opioid use disorder.

The Medical Assistant will play a critical role in the patient experience including optimizing patient flow and working collaboratively with the team to create a patient centered environment.

The employee will perform routine weights and measurements, collect and document point of care urine drug screens, assist with patient transport, order routine unit supplies, assist in keeping the clinic clean and orderly, assist in the care and maintenance of equipment and supplies, assist in patient scheduling, patient check-in and check-out, and answer and return phone-calls as necessary.

The Medical Assistant will actively participate in tracking quality improvement and quality assurance activities.


For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.


Department Description

  • The UCSF Department of Psychiatry at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) is dedicated to providing culturally competent services to the diverse patient population we serve. Providing a range of clinical services informed by evidencebased practices, the Department of Psychiatry provides care to thousands of patients each year. The Division of Substance Abuse and Addiction Medicine (DSAAM) provides multidisciplinary consultation and treatment for patients with substance use disorders at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH). DSAAM provides opiate replacement therapy for heroin and other opiate addiction through the Opiate Treatment Outpatient Program (OTOP) at Ward 93 as a wellestablished and proven effective methadone treatment program.

Required Qualifications

  • High School graduation and two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year experience as a Medical assistant / Hospital Assistant in a hospital or medical practice.
  • Active Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training within 6 months of hire.
  • Demonstrated computer familiarity, keyboard skills, computer literacy in programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Active American Heart Association Basic Life Support CPR Certification or completion within 2 months of hire.
  • Willingness to learn new computer programs as needed to sustain practice operations.
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience with populations diverse in gender, sexual orientation, and ethnicity.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with others. Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; detail oriented.
  • Good oral, written, and telephone communication skills. Able to work as a team member in a culturally diverse setting
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with EPIC or Avatar electronic health records.
  • Prior UC experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, or other health science or behavioral science.
  • Experience working in a mental health or substance use disorder treatment setting.
  • Knowledge of medical and/or psychiatric terminology.
  • Knowledge of ethical, legal and confidentiality issues pertaining to substance users with severe medical and/or mental illness.
  • Experience with building rapport with difficult to engage patients.
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of major mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Willingness to learn and communicate about substance use disorders and medications for addiction treatment.
