    Job Description


    POSITION OBJECTIVE
    Working under frequent supervision, The Research Technician will perform technical procedures and experiments according to specific instructions/ protocols.

    They will perform research work in the CASE Biomanufacturing and Microfabrication Laboratory (CASE-BML) to support the advancement of new solutions in sickle cell anemia in-vitro diagnostics and blood cell biomechanics.

    The project involves working with a newly developed novel microfluidic assay that allows rapid, preprocessing free, and standardized interrogation of red blood cells and white blood cells.

    The project will include experiments aiming at the characterization of cellular adhesive and occlusive events in sickle cell disease patients and correlate them to the patient's clinical state and response to treatment.

    The research technician will facilitate research projects by preparing cell cultures, helping with device fabrication, collecting participant blood samples and information, and assisting with conducting experiments and data analysis to provide scientific information as part of a larger project.


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Perform technical procedures and experiments according to specific instructions/protocols to test cellular adhesion, density, deformability, and viscosity in patient blood samples. (55%)
    • Record experimental data; collect/tabulate/calculate, and assist with analysis. Maintain records of experiments and test equipment utilized in experiments (15%)
    • Enter sequences into computer; analyzes; performs experimental device and machine repair. Assist with testing study participants using experimental device and help with troubleshooting as necessary (15%)
    • Assist with purchasing routine lab supplies, collect blood samples from participants at UHCMC and CWRU Biorepository (10%)
    NON
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Assist in the overall organization and maintenance of the laboratory. (4%)
    • Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)

    CONTACTS

    Department:
    Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow.

    University:
    Occasional contact with other departments to share information.

    External:
    Limited contact with vendors to order laboratory supplies and essentials. Occasional contact with UH personnel and patients to help with research study conduct.

    Students:
    Contact with student employees to exchange information and maintain workflow.


    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
    This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.


    QUALIFICATIONS
    Experience: 1 to 2 years of related experience required.


    Education:
    High school education required.


    REQUIRED SKILLS

    • Familiarity with safe handling of biohazardous materials (human blood and body fluids); and knowledge of safe handling practices for laboratory chemicals.
    • Experience in use of computers and software including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
    • Experience with basic laboratory equipment (centrifuge, light microscopes, balances, pH meter, incubators, etc.)
    • Verbal and written communication skills to be effective in communicating and interacting with a diverse group of people within a laboratory setting and a hospital setting. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
    • Organizational skills in record-keeping with ability to organize, analyze, and calculate data.
    • Must have the ability to maintain meticulous, complete, and easily retrievable laboratory data.
    • Ability to take initiative and handle responsibility, and demonstrated effective time management skills. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
    • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    General laboratory environment.

    May have exposure to hazards, and blood borne pathogens as blood samples collected from patients and healthy donors are routinely used in the experiments.

    The research assistant will receive proper blood borne pathogens and general lab safety training, as well as training for lab specific safety measures.

    In rare cases, may be requested to work overtime and weekends for experiments as needed for the progress of ongoing laboratory projects.
