    Job Description

    The University of Nevada, Reno, School of Medicine is recruiting a Staff Research Associate 1. This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding.

    This position will oversee the management of animal colonies, including genotyping, behavioral tests, weaning pups, collecting samples, conducting PCR and essential mouse behavioral tests for ongoing projects.

    This position will quantify and graph data and perform statistical analyses, calculate, and adjust drug doses for mice, perform injections, collect blood, spinal cord, sciatic nerve, diaphragm, and muscle samples from mice and will serve as the lead person for in vivo preclinical drug testing.

    The Staff Research Associate 1 will conduct research experiments, collect, and analyze data, manage, and maintain laboratory equipment, and operations, and perform administrative tasks to ensure the smooth functioning of the laboratory.

    This position offers an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research projects and gain valuable experience in a dynamic academic environment and will play a pivotal role in training undergraduates, demonstrating expertise and dedication to the advancement of research goals while effectively managing the lab resources and facilitating training and development of junior members.

    Responsibilities include:
    • Conduct experiments and carry out research projects in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
    • Perform laboratory techniques and procedures, including but not limited to the management of animal colonies, genotyping, behavior testing, weaning pups, collection of samples, conduct PCR, and ensure proper care, and maintenance.
    • Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, including managing inventory, and compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
    • Provide training and supervision to undergraduate students involved in research projects and ensure adherence to experimental protocols and safety guidelines.
    Required Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the required area of specialization; OR
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
    This position requires experience working with animals and collecting samples.

    Pursuant to NRS , this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.

    Schedule

    The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.

    Positions in animal care facilities are considered essential personnel. Incumbents may be required to work weekends, holidays, and report to work during campus closures to provide care.

    Compensation Grade

    Grade 29

    In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate's qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
