Duties:


  • Duties listed are at full performance grade GS11 level.
  • Applies technical methods and procedures related to aviation operations and to managing agency programs. Performs a wide variety of aviation operations projects incorporating diverse technical knowledge.
  • Identifies ATGS trainees, training needs, and either mentors' trainees or assigns mentors to trainees. Processes all associated required paperwork and notifications.
  • Develops curriculum, coursework preparation, development of training aids, and evaluation criteria for aerial supervision programs such as ATGS, ASM, and HLCO.
  • Coordinates with the Regional Coordination Center to determine needs and length of contracts, aircraft performance requirements, and mobilization information on ATGS resources.
  • Provides technical and administrative supervision to employees in a variety of professional and nonprofessional occupations.
  • Provides leadership, allocates resources, and implements activities to accomplish Forest Service multicultural organization direction, and Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights requirements, goals, policies, and objectives.

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required.
  • Willing to live/work in remote locations (volatile/unpredictable).
  • Some Fire positions may have Conditions of Employment such as: a valid state driver's license; a commercial driver's license (CDL); preappointment and random drug testing; or a physical or medical examination.

    Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the
GS-10: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-09) in the Federal Service
OR two full years (36 semester/54 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level education or master's degree if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture)
OR an appropriate combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position (in excess of 18 semester/27 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Examples of specialized experience are: Assisting in implementing helicopter service contracts and enforcing contract provisions. Assisting in aviation program and plan implementation and development. Directing initial and extended attack suppression actions such as determining incident needs, and dispatch/deployment of personnel and equipment.

For the GS-11: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-10) in the Federal Service
OR two full years (36 semester/54 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level education or master's degree if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture)
OR an appropriate combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position (in excess of 18 semester/27 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Examples of specialized experience are: Assisting in developing helicopter service contracts and enforcing contract provisions. Assisting in directing and coordinating aviation and helicopter rappel operations in support of fire suppression activities. Assessing various fire management factors such as aviation, fuels, suppression capability, resistance to control, ignition probability, predicted rate of spread, and flame height and weather.
