    The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Cornell University, seeks a mission-focused and team oriented Medical Technologist 1 (Histotechnician) to support Anatomic Pathology services at Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) by performing high quality and detailed specimen processing to prepare submissions for clinical evaluation.

    What You'll Do


    • Perform routine and advanced histopathology, which includes trimming, processing, embedding, and sectioning tissues.
    • Perform routine and advanced histology stains, including H&E and special stains. This may also include performing Immunohistochemistry stains and In-Situ-Hybridization stains depending on experience.
    • Display a strong knowledge of anatomy, with the proven ability to successfully differentiate various organ and tissue types from a vast variety of species.
    • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment used throughout the histology, trim room, and TSE laboratory areas.
    • Serve as a resource to all pathologists, residents, students, staff, and research investigators.
    • Clearly communicate directly with supervisor(s) any problems that develop and actions taken for resolution.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    Employees must adhere to the AHDC Quality Assurance system, confidentiality statement, standard operating procedures, and organizational policies.

    Employees are expected to meet all of the Cornell University Staff Skills for Success, which are essential for individual and organizational success.


    Employees working in the lab must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.


    The normal schedule for this position is Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm, for a total of 39 hours per week.

    Specific schedules may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, University holidays and scheduled breaks.


    This is a three- year term position; reappointment on a term or permanent basis will be contingent upon funding and performance.

    What you have:

    • Bachelor's degree in a science related field, with up to two years of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.

    • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

    If you have all those things, great Here are some preferred qualifications:


    • Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) ASCP certification.
    • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technologist licensure.
    • Two years of experience working in a diagnostic or research histopathology laboratory.
    • Strong background in anatomy.

    Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) is a high visibility and high volume veterinary diagnostic laboratory that promotes the health, productivity, and welfare of food-and fiber-producing animals, companion animals, and zoo and wildlife populations.

    Through its comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services, the AHDC detects animal diseases and supports animal and public health, promotes environmental stewardship, and fosters economic growth.

    Anatomic Pathology (AP) offers comprehensive diagnostic services including post-mortem examination, histopathology, biopsy evaluation, and diagnostic immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridization.

    They expertly process and evaluate specimens from a wide range of species at the request of veterinarians to aid in the identification of injury and disease that can threaten the life of a single animal or an entire population.
