- A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry
- The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant
- ~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients
- ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia

- This position requires mostly periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing
- Transferring patients and objects may be required
- The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations
- The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients/residents who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders

Authorized for highly qualified applicants. The Durham VA is currently looking to bring onboard an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon.
An Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Provides a full range of services including assessment and using the most appropriate techniques for dentoalveolar surgery, complex dental extractions, treatment of orofacial infections, treatment of orofacial trauma, pre-prosthetic surgery, placement of dental implants, diagnostic procedures consistent with the practice of OMS, surgical treatment of oral and maxillofacial pathology, diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular dysfunction, surgical reconstruction of acquired or developmental oral-facial anomalies, treatment of cosmetic defects resulting from trauma, treatment of orthognathic deformities, grafting procedures including the harvesting of graft material consistent with the practice of OMS.
Provide treatment utilizing simple and advanced dental implants. Performs appropriate evaluations for patients that may be medically compromised.Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions to units/programs in the Medical Center to which they are assigned and has clinical privileges to practice including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management.
Is appropriately licensed by the State Board of Dental Examiners licensed to provide outpatient intravenous sedation in conjunction with oral and maxillofacial treatment.
Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences, weekly Tumor Board, Moderate Sedation Committee and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care.
Orders diagnostic tests and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions.Ensures that the practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is consistent with Joint Commission, CARF, VA policies and procedures, VISN standards, national statutes and regulations.
Medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPPA policies.Provides oversite, direction, and education to dental staff and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and General Practice residents that rotate through the hospital and clinic.
Participates in Oral and Maxillofacial 24 hour call on a rotating basis with other attending(s) for the hospital and clinic patients.
