Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Transit Driver is responsible for operating a transit vehicle and safely delivering the general public to and from their destinations. The primary objective of the position is to provide safe, reliable, and efficient origin to destination public transportation. The applicant must have prior driving experience, have a neat appearance, be courteous and have a sincere desire to work with a variety of passengers and the public.
This position will primarily drive fixed route service but will be cross-trained to provide dial-a-ride service for an average total of 19 hours per week.
Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
Demonstrate excellent driving skills and people skills, work under stress and meet strict timelines while repeatedly loading and unloading individuals from the bus daily.
Possess a strong commitment to customer service and safety and a demonstrated sensitivity to a diverse group of patrons including the elderly and disabled. Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant manner remaining calm in adverse weather conditions, crowded traffic conditions and in dealing with irate or disorderly passengers.
Ability to operate a passenger lift and safely secure mobility devices using a 4-point tie-down system, as well as operate an electronic tablet to track ridership, fares, etc. and handle transfers.
Observe passenger activities in the bus and at the bus stop, and take appropriate action as needed. Operate a two-way radio and relay information to dispatch/other drivers.
Ability to accept direction and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public.
Able to report to work on time and in proper uniform and maintain a strong attendance record. Ability to write reports in a coherent, legible manner.
Knowledge of all appropriate federal/state/local regulations/policies (i.e., ADA, DOT, etc.) and able to work a flexible schedule.
Minimum qualifications & Requirements
A high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
Experience with safe operation of passenger cars, trucks or other motorized vehicles in a variety of weather conditions.
Two (2) years in transit or similar agency as a driver preferred.
Preferred candidates must be at least 21 years old and possess a valid Class C Commercial Driver's License, have a passenger endorsement and have a valid DOT Medical Examination Card or be able to get one prior to hire
Ability to pass a background check and a pre-employment drug test upon offer of employment. Additionally must be able to pass DOT random drug and alcohol testing for the duration of employment.
Be available to work the afternoon shift from 11: 30am to 7:30pm weekdays and/or the morning shift 5:30am to 1:00pm, and occasionally on Saturdays from 8:30am to 3:30pm.
Ability to push and/or pull passengers in wheelchairs over short distances many times daily. Repeatedly stoop; crouch; kneel; bend at the knee, hip, and waist; twist at the knee and waist when performing vehicle inspections and securing wheelchairs. Reach forward, rearward, upward, and downward when operating vehicle, performing vehicle inspections, and securing wheelchairs. Finger (manual dexterity) vehicle controls and paperwork required.
Ability to use full sense of hearing, including tone; pitch, and volume, using two-way radio, and assisting passengers and public.
Ability to use full range of sense of speech, including audibility, annunciation, and projection, when using two-way radio and assisting passengers and public.
Ability to use full range of sense of vision, including depth perception, accommodation, color vision, and acuity near/far when operating transit vehicle.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Sit in driver's seat for long periods of time.

Be subject to a low risk of injury due to vehicle accident, mechanical failure, fire, and/or explosion.
Be subject to vehicle noise and vibration while operating transit vehicle.
Be subject to vehicle exhaust fumes and odors, and road dusts and mist.
Be able to lift 40 pounds.
