Overview of Position:


The role of the Pro Bono Coordinator is not "one-size-fits-all" and is designed to work on a range of tasks, with the expectation for each Pro Bono Coordinator to contribute in meaningful ways reflecting the Pro Bono Coordinator's interests, legal expertise and skills; the Pro Bono Team's and ICLS' priorities; and our community and client needs.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The core responsibilities for the Expungement position are as follows:

  • Helping to refine and implement the vision of ICLS' Expungement Program, which includes excellent legal services with a preference for full-scope representation; volunteer opportunities; and ICLS as the leader in expungement legal aid.
  • Being responsible for case management and client representation, including client correspondence, oversight of volunteer work, and ensuring excellent representation.
  • Maintaining a substantial caseload of expungement cases, including probono placements, cocounsel with volunteers, and ICLS representation as needed.
  • Developing and strengthening community partnerships and client pipelines, through inperson and virtual programming, conferences, legal education, and other events.
  • Developing and expanding partnerships with local attorneys, law schools, and other volunteers to help expand capacity to represent clients, including at hearings.
  • Cocounseling with volunteers, as needed, to ensure excellent representation of clients, including by reviewing volunteer work, providing guidance, discussing case strategy, and appearing at hearings when volunteers are unable.
  • Overseeing and training volunteers, including the development of training materials, inperson and virtual training, shadowing opportunities, and hearing representation.
  • Developing and expanding expungement clinic models, including virtual and inperson expungement screening clinics, declaration drafting clinics, fullscope case placements.
  • Becoming ICLS' inhouse expungement expert, keeping up to date with changes in expungement law necessary to coordinate and expand the program, as appropriate.
  • Representing ICLS in the local, statewide, and broader community as an advocate of our clients and community, expungement, pro bono, and other ICLS core missions.

Desired Education and Experience:


  • A minimum of two years of experience as a practicing attorney and ability to practice law in the State of California or a minimum of 1 year of experience as an ICLS attorney;
  • Background in expungement law preferred but not required;
  • Demonstrated commitment to legal services work;
  • Demonstrated commitment to race, equity, and inclusion initiatives;
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with individuals from diverse communities;
  • Strong project management skills, including organization and ability to multitask;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to supervise volunteers, including law students and paralegals;
  • Ability to lead and collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Experience mentoring and training attorneys and/or law clerks;
  • Ability to cultivate and develop pro bono relationships;
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English, with Spanish being a plus; and
  • Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint proficiency.

Benefits & Compensation:

$78,000.00 to $115,000.00 Annually DOE + Benefits
