Join our team and make a positive impact on the lives of others We are looking for a Payroll Manager_ _for our Accounting team.


  • This is a hybrid role that requires a weekly commute of at least 2 days per week to our main office in New York or the FreedomCare hub closest to you._

Position Overview:


The Manager of Payroll will report to the Assistant VP, Controller and will function as a hands-on resource and lead the payroll team in a rapidly growing accounting department with employees in 31 states.

You will be responsible for maintaining the payroll processing system to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions, as well as ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes


You will have the opportunity to set measurable goals for your team members and manage their accomplishments, given the autonomy to make significant decisions guided by policies and procedures, with the guidance of the AVP, Controller.

These decisions will significantly impact payroll operations and the team's ability to achieve objectives and metrics.


Every Day You Will:


  • Oversees and manages the daily workflow of the payroll team and provides handson support to a payroll function with employees in 31 states
  • Manage the payroll relationship with the external payroll provider while maintaining stringent oversight
  • Manage the payroll inbox with employee inquiries in a timely, efficient, customer service driven manner
  • Develop company communications on key payroll updates/changes or programs (401k, Deferred Comp Plan) as appropriate
  • Develop performance metrics to identify efficiency opportunities for the department and the company
  • Document processes to capture best practices and streamline existing processes
  • Ability to work through a manual environment and provide process enhancements to automate
  • Lead handson education and support to payroll department and facilities to keep the teams uptodate with payroll procedures, regulations, and time & attendance/payroll systems
  • Ensures compliance with federal, multiple state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices
  • Generate payroll reports for management and accounting purposes
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with several departments to drive process improvements and change management communication
  • People & Culture, Workforce Operations, and other stakeholders
  • Mentor team by providing guidance on best practices and fostering a collaborative work environment
  • Bachelor's degree in related field preferred or related experience
  • 5+ years handson payroll management experience is preferred
  • Experience implementing payroll platforms is a plus
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (i.e. pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and sum if formulas) and Office suite
  • Thorough understanding of Federal, State, and Local employee laws and regulations
  • Experience with Empeon payroll system a plus
  • Knowledge of Verint (scheduling platform) or Purely (payroll time tracking system) a plus
  • Multistate /multientity experience
  • Advanced knowledge of payroll related policies, practices, and regulations
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills are essential
  • Demonstrate prioritizing task, taking appropriate action and followthrough until issue(s) are fully address/resolved
  • Must be able to maintain highly confidential information
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills
  • Ability to manage others and provide learning and development opportunities
  • Strong attention to the details, and accuracy with a focus on customer service
  • Positive attitude within a collaborative team environment
  • Adapts well to an everchanging environment
