- Act as a common point of contact for specific optical diagnostics to ensure they are designed, setup, and operating effectively in a 24/7 facility.
- Be responsible for the system design, implementation, and integration for optical diagnostic components and subsystems and participating in design reviews while working under general direction.
- Address experimental concerns for newly designed hardware such as: location, interference with other Target Area activities, considerations of facility/utility impacts, installation plans, and staffing/operational plans, utilizing readily identifiable factors, standard techniques, and methods.
- Maintain, test, and upgrade commissioned optical diagnostic systems including, but not limited to, Near Backscatter Imager , Full Aperture Backscatter System , and Scattered Light Time Diagnostic. .
- Provide general secondary support for the Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector and Optical Thomson Scattering systems.
- Resolve, disposition, and track operational problems associated with any of the optical systems employed on NIF and promote design changes.
- Ensure offline calibration and availability of spare system components.
- Conduct engineering support of operations and define process improvements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Perform independent research into new approaches to record optical signals.
- Select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to design and conduct experiments to characterize subcomponents.
- Utilize comprehensive knowledge for laser diagnostic systems and support off-normal reactive maintenance.
- Participate in the fielding and commissioning of new systems on various physics platforms.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Fundamental knowledge of optical systems, fibers, and photon-to-electronic processes.
- Operational experience with oscilloscopes and similar recording systems, CCD and CMOS camera systems.
- Knowledge of the optical design, fabrication, installation, and testing of diagnostic systems.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Experience using standard project management practices.
- Ability to work in confined or restricted movement areas, climb stairs, stand, or walk for long periods of time, and pass NIF Radiological Worker I qualification.
- Experience identifying, defining, and solving multi-disciplinary problems in a timely, cost-effective manner.
- Comprehensive knowledge of and experience with developing detector systems and high-speed optical streak cameras.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present to explain technical information.
- Master's degree in Optical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- Experience working with optical components, performing beam alignments, and troubleshooting laser performance issues.
- Experience working with radiological materials and associated controls.
- Experience in the development of hardware or systems used in clean vacuum environments.

Pay Range:
$110,700- $170,556
$110,700 - $142,128 annually for the SES.1 level
$132,810 - $170,556 annually for the SES.2 level

Job DescriptionWe have an opening for an Optical Diagnostic Engineer in the Target Diagnostic Engineering & Science Group.
This work will take place within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate, home to the world's most energetic laser.
It is an exciting time to join the team that achieved fusion ignition in December 2022 (as well as multiple subsequent times), a historic moment in science, opening up new physics regimes and setting the stage for new fusion energy possibilities.
You will be responsible for the engineering and experimental setup of various target diagnostic systems, providing engineering support for new additions, upgrades to existing hardware, overall coordination, implementation of shot setup, maintenance, and repair for a set of optical diagnostic systems.
This position will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
