Definition:

Under general supervision from the Outpatient Behavioral Health Services Supervisor, performs professional behavioral health services and behavior modification techniques to assigned families.

Works with families to help improve their quality of life through skill acquisition and replaces challenging behaviors by teaching and reinforcing desirable ones.

This is done through assessment and the design of function-based interventions and providing behavioral support to the client, family and team members in the implementation of these interventions.

Behavioral coaches work with the child and parent by providing age appropriate behavioral interventions and with team members to address the child's behavior and needs through training.

Behavior coaching can target a variety of areas.
This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Distinguishing Features:

The Behavioral Coach is distinguished from the Social Worker I (Case Management) job class by carrying a higher proportion of difficult or complex cases and provides services in home and in the field.

This job class also focuses primarily on behavior modification. In addition to behavior modification, the Behavioral Coach works within an intervention team to provide in-home intensive family services.


Examples of Tasks:


  • 1. Assumes responsibility for creating and implementing age appropriate behavior modification plans to teach new methods of dealing with challenging behaviors including anger management, selfcontrol and conflictresolution skills.
  • Provides screening and assessment to formulate behavioral coaching and parenting treatment goals.
  • Provides life-skills and parenting skills training, identifying alternatives for caregivers in handling behaviors and monitoring progress in achieving goals.
  • Assesses the effectiveness of services and change service delivery as needed.
  • Provides services in home and in the field.
  • Documents services provided in the client electronic health record. Maintains client records in accordance with department and division policies and requirements.
  • Provides facetoface services to the child or youth for whom services are authorized.
  • Participates in prevention and early intervention Community awareness events
  • Plans and schedules activities. Maintains regular scheduled office hours in order to be available to clients and other Community members.
  • Participates in training and professional development activities, including clinical case staffing, team meetings, supervision, and consultation. Provides alternative solutions to issues to ensure the greatest benefit for the clients in accomplishing the program objectives.
  • Helps maintain an environment within the Health and Human Services Department that encourages teamwork, interdependence and ethical behavior.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Outpatient Behavioral Health Services Supervisor to maintain and enhance departmental and program operations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs, and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health diagnoses.
  • Knowledge of case management techniques, practices and crisis intervention methods.
  • Knowledge of CPS policies, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of learning theory and behavioral approaches for teaching new skills and managing maladaptive child behavior.
  • Knowledge of modeling and assisting parents with implementing skills training or behavioral intervention plans.
  • Knowledge of social work principles and concepts.
  • Knowledge of social work methods and techniques, including group and individual counseling, crisis intervention and referrals.
  • Knowledge of typical child development.
  • Skill developing rapport with families with families in home and community settings.
  • Skill with case management including planning, scheduling and time management.
  • Skill recording and documenting case information and case file maintenance.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other social work professionals, SRPMIC coworkers, Community officials and clients.
  • Skill evaluating customer needs and utilizing SRPMIC resources or other appropriate referrals to meet client needs.
  • Skill dealing with sensitive, personal issues and maintaining appropriate professional, confidential relationships.
  • Ability to go inhome and provide alternative solutions in order to meet client needs.
