Providence Public Schools District (PPSD) seeks an exceptional
SCHOOL COUNSELOR
who is highly qualified and skillful to join our community of teachers, students and stakeholders.

This is an exciting opportunity for teachers who seek a challenging yet rewarding teaching experience.


Note:
Counselors receive up to 5 extra days


Under direction of the school principal and the general direction of the Director of School Counseling, school counselors will adhere to the PPSD Comprehensive School Counseling Program based on the American School Counselor Association National Standards and Competencies and the Rhode Island Framework for School Counseling to foster positive outcomes for all students through education, prevention, early identification and intervention.

School counselors will implement a comprehensive datadriven program and practice ASCA's developmental domains of academic achievement, college and career readiness, and social emotional development to serve the needs of all students.


Additionally, school counselors will:
Become members of a professional learning community where purposeful collaboration, flexibility, innovation and shared decision making are essential Support and nurture the academic, college and career readiness, and socialemotional development of all students Participate in all district and schoolbased professional development, including working with internal (coaches) and external (consultants) supports Engage in all districtdriven curricular and other initiatives as defined by the Providence School Department Follow all relevant District procedures and policies.
We serve approximately 22,000 students at 37 elementary, middle, and high schools. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Combined, our students and families speak 55 different languages and hail from 91 countries of origin.

In PPSD, the teachers and leaders set high expectations for academic achievement, provide equal access to differentiated instruction, and endeavor to close the achievement and opportunity gap among historically marginalized subgroups within the schools.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Master's degree in School Counseling from an accredited college or university (preferred)


RIDE Certification Requirements:


All Grades School Counselor, Grades PK12
ESL Certification Preferred


Additional Experience:

Demonstrated knowledge of content area standards and researchbased counseling practices Understanding of Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS) and the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) competencies Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, administrators, and parent/community members Demonstrated communication and group facilitation skills Knowledge of adult learning theory Highly proficient in technology and ability to utilize online platforms You must complete the new hire compliance training prior to your first day of employment
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES:
Academic Development:

Provide students with an orientation to school procedures and learning experiences Advise and motivate students in academic planning for high achieving personal best in the overall process of scheduling course selections Advise and schedule students into classes at the secondary level (as needed at the elementary level) Analyze and interpret data including standardized test results for placement, advising and student support Interpret, monitor and ensure accuracy of grades, transcripts, and student records (secondary) Inspire,explore and encourage advanced placement and dual and concurrent enrollment opportunities (secondary)
Career Development:
  • Coordinate and organize college and/or career fairs
Promote school and community CTE enrichment opportunities Prepare, inspire,and guide students through postsecondary planning and achievement Participate and coordinate informational sessions such as school choice, college/career, and financial aid (secondary) for students and families Support financial aid awareness, planning, and completion (secondary) Advise and assist students with scholarship opportunities (secondary)
Social Emotional Development: Inclusively contribute to students' selfesteem building, promoting globally productive, highachieving, lifelong learning individuals Instruct, carry out, and motivate
