Davis Medical Center, located in Petersburg, Virginia, is a 94-bed medical facility providing acute medical diagnoses, skilled care, intermediate care, and long-term care to individuals receiving services in DBHDS facilities and within the community that have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

Admissions to HWDMC are generally either permanent placement or special hospitalization. Patients typically come to HWDMC as a special hospitalization for step-down to stabilize, post-surgery rehabilitation, or long-term care.


The
Behavioral Technician will provide therapeutic behavioral interventions to an adult population of residents and patients with dementia, mental illness, and/or intellectual/ developmental disabilities.

The position will provide training and support to direct care staff for residents and patients who have behavioral support needs and plans.

The Behavioral Technician will participate in treatment plan development with interdisciplinary team members.


Job Duties:


  • Engage with residents/patients who have Behavior Support Plans according to treatment plan to assist residents/patients with meeting treatment goals.
  • Provide direct intervention techniques to deescalate residents/patients with mental illness (including aggressive behaviors and patients in custody of the court).
  • Provide training to direct care staff regarding implementation and documentation of resident/patient Behavior Support Plans.
  • Utilize therapeutic communication and rolemodeling techniques
  • Build rapport and therapeutic relationships with patients
  • Initiates and participates in leisure skill and socialization activities
  • Monitor, identify, and document changes in patients' physical, mental, or behavior status and immediately report changes to the Charge RN and Psychologist/Psychiatrist
  • Provides Charge RN prompt feedback regarding any safety issues on the unit and provide suggestions for improving the milieu.
  • Use safety plans to deescalate situations without the use of physical intervention
  • Make rounds throughout the unit to ensure a safe environment
  • Assists with transporting residents/patients with behavioral support need to appointments within HDMC and outside of HDMC as requested and appropriate
  • Use TOVA techniques when intervening in dangerous patient behaviors and follows all expectations.
  • Assist Nursing staff with covering breaks for residents/patients who have 1:1 needs

Minimum Qualifications
Experience providing direct care to individuals with mental illness, substance abuse issues, and/or intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Basic knowledge of behavioral intervention techniques.

Must be able to administer CPR and perform Therapeutic Options (TO) approved physical interventions.

Ability to work overtime hours, rotating weekends, and holidays.

Proficiency using Microsoft Office

Valid Virginia driver's license required.


Ability to provide direct care and therapeutic options to lift, push, pull, restrain, support patients in excess of 100 lbs.


Ability to provide direct care and therapeutic services to mental health patients, including but not limited to aggressive, mood disorders and behavioral health conditions.

Ability to use electronic health record system.


Additional Considerations
Experience with behavioral health and human services, is preferred.
Coursework or certification in mental health, human services, criminal justice, counseling or other related to mental health, is preferred.
Certification as Qualified Mental Health Professional or other behavioral health certification, is preferred.
Electronic Health Records (E.H.R.) experience is preferred.
