After-School Student Recreation Specialist


Job Summary:


The After-School Student Recreation Specialist is responsible for creating and facilitating engaging recreational activities for students participating in the after-school program.

They ensure a safe and supportive environment where students can develop social skills, explore interests, and engage in healthy, active lifestyles.


Responsibilities:


Activity Planning and Implementation:

  • Develop a diverse range of recreational activities, including sports, games, arts and crafts, and teambuilding exercises, to meet the interests and developmental needs of students.
  • Plan and organize activity schedules, ensuring a balance of structured and unstructured playtime to promote physical activity, creativity, and social interaction.
  • Implement ageappropriate and inclusive activities that accommodate students with varying abilities and preferences.

Instruction and Supervision:

  • Provide instruction, guidance, and supervision to students during recreational activities, ensuring their safety, wellbeing, and adherence to program rules and guidelines.
  • Demonstrate proper techniques, sportsmanship, and teamwork principles to foster skill development, cooperation, and positive behavior among participants.
  • Monitor student behavior and intervene in conflicts or disciplinary issues, employing appropriate conflict resolution strategies and support techniques.

Engagement and Relationship Building:

  • Foster positive relationships with students, creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where they feel valued, respected, and encouraged to participate.
  • Encourage teamwork, collaboration, and peer interaction through group activities, challenges, and cooperative games that promote communication and camaraderie.
  • Recognize and celebrate students' achievements, effort, and contributions to foster a sense of accomplishment and selfesteem.

Safety and Risk Management:

  • Ensure the safety and security of students by maintaining a clean, organized, and hazardfree environment conducive to recreational activities.
  • Implement safety protocols, emergency procedures, and first aid interventions as needed to address accidents, injuries, or medical concerns.
  • Monitor equipment and facilities for maintenance needs, reporting any issues or hazards to appropriate staff members for prompt resolution.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Communicate regularly with program staff, parents, and school administrators to provide updates on student participation, behavior, and program activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to coordinate scheduling, resources, and logistics for multiactivity events, special projects, or themed programming.
  • Seek feedback from students and stakeholders to evaluate program effectiveness, identify areas for improvement, and develop future activity plans.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required); Bachelor's degree in recreation, education, or related field (preferred).
  • Previous experience working with children and youth in a recreational or educational setting.
  • Knowledge of recreational activities, sports, and games suitable for various age groups and skill levels.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to connect with students, build rapport, and create a positive atmosphere.
  • Certification in CPR, first aid, or lifeguarding (preferred).
  • Ability to maintain a safe and inclusive environment while promoting fun, active engagement among participants.
