    Nurse (Patient Safety Manager) at Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration in Boise, Idaho, United States Job Description Summary The Patient Safety Manager (PSM) is a registered professional nurse, qualified by education and experience to provide clinical and administrative oversight to the quality of patient care and the appropriateness and timeliness of services provided.

    The PSM leads improvements in the safety and quality of Veterans' health care across all BVAMC programs and facilities by implementing the VHA NCPS' systems-focused processes to prevent patient harm.

    Responsibilities Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

    Develops, implements, evaluates, sustains, and reports on all patient safety related programs, processes, and activities to maintain the safety and quality of BVAMC patient care in compliance with VHA and accreditation guidance.

    This includes time sensitive review, investigation, analysis, and reporting of BVAMC incident/close call event reports and initiating appropriate immediate, short-, and long-term actions to preserve patient safety and health.

    Convenes multidisciplinary stakeholder workgroups to recommend retrospective (RCA) and prospective (HFMEA) system improvements to ensure patients safety. Utilizes Patient Safety/Sentinel Event Alerts and Recalls identifying and eliminating threats to patient safety.

    Competently assumes the leadership roles and responsibilities of the PSM, providing collaborative evaluations of the interconnected system factors that influence patient safety (structures, processes, stakeholder actions, and care outcomes).

    Recommends improvements to reduce risk of harm and improve patient care safety and quality through high reliability activities and compliance with VHA, accreditation, and evidence-based practice guidelines.

    Applies leadership, communication, team building, cognitive, and problem-solving skills; and principles of adult education to improve staff knowledge and attitudes about, and skills required for compliance with organizational and accreditation standards and guidance related to patient safety.

    Serves as patient safety and quality content expert for BVAMC staff at all program, governance, and organizational levels to support strategic planning, decision making, organizational initiatives, and performance improvement interventions.

    Participates in leadership and mentorship activities to create professional development opportunities for staff and build organizational resources and capacity to promote and ensure delivery of safe, high quality patient care.
