Grade: 16 [$ $24.37 / hour]


SUMMARY:

The Court Officer serves as liaison between the Lewiston Police Department and the 8th District Court, resident and visiting judges, the Androscoggin County District Attorney's office and defense attorneys.

The Court Officer is a civilian member of the department and represents the department at District Court proceedings and performs related duties.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and three (3) years of paralegal, law enforcement, or related experience.

Thorough knowledge of federal and state criminal law, traffic statutes and city ordinances, and above average organizational and communication skills are needed for this position.


WORK ACTIVITIES:

Responsible for the organization and presentation of all City Ordinances, civil and criminal cases at the District Court and related case paperwork needed by the District Attorney office, District Court staff, or the District Court Violations Bureau.

Maintain and coordinate with personnel across several divisions within the department, schedule upcoming Court hearings; notify officers and keeps the D.A.'s office, Clerk of Courts and District Court Violations Bureau advised of officer availability.

Create, maintain, record, and dispose of case packages in a timely and efficient manner.

Prepare and submit reports, receive and deliver official court documents, and submit tracking sheets for review and action by the Support Service Commander.

Review and sign all complaints originating from, or going to, District Court ensuring proper and accurate processing.

Actively assist sworn personnel in the generation and presentation of cases at the District Court level, preparing affidavits and obtaining arrest warrants.

Provide up-to-date and ongoing training to personnel on court procedures, proper report completion, and techniques for giving court testimony. Assist the Department's civil prosecutor in preparing cases, including providing attested copies of violated ordinances.

Maintain daily contact with the Androscoggin County Jail concerning the processing of prisoners and assist Probation Officers with information on probationers.

Actively maintain files and logs of information such as active and voided summonses, warrants, and protection orders. Performs other related duties as required.


Pay:
$ $24.37 per hour
