Medical Assistant I - Non Exempt


Position Purpose:


Act as an assistant to Physicians, Mid-levels, Registered Nurses, Radiology Technologists and assists with patient care and office based procedures and/or clinic.


Reports Directly To:
Clinical Manager


Job Overview:


A Vascular/Wound Care Medical Assistant is responsible for preparing patients for examination and/or treatment and assists providers as directed while supporting them in medical procedures and clinical settings.

The Medical Assistant is expected to handle the logistics for optimal provider and patient flow. In addition, successfully keeps the team on track while providing the best patient care possible.


Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Escort patient to exam room and prepares patient for examination, procedure and treatment.
  • Obtain vital signs and records in Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Communicates to provider(s) where and when they are needed within each department and updates provider(s) regarding patient status.
  • Accesses EMR for patients using appropriate software.
  • Obtains, evaluates and records patient history employing critical thinking skills.
  • Recognizes changes in a patient condition and communicates effectively with the team and providers.
  • Captures, labels and uploads patient images including wounds, extremities, face and any other necessary images.
  • Assists with examinations, procedures and treatments.
  • Assists with debridements, biopsies and cultures.
  • Collects and process specimens.
  • Performs CLIAwaived tests.
  • Prepares patients for sterile procedures and sterile trays while maintaining sterile requirements.
  • Responsible for measuring patient for compression stockings.
  • Discharges patients providing after visit instructions to patient and/or caregiver as directed by the provider.
  • Ensures patient care plan has been implemented.
  • Practices Standard Precautions, including hand washing and disposal of biohazardous materials.
  • Turn over exam room in coordination with patient discharge, sanitizing key surfaces, removing trash between each patient, and any other requirements needed to maintain a hygienic environment.
  • Ensures adequate supplies are available and communicates required supply stock to appropriate team members.
  • Maintain a proactive approach to ensure provider schedule stays on track, minimize patient wait time, and communicate unexpected delays to the team.
  • Submits medication orders to pharmacies.
  • Schedules, coordinate and monitor appointments.
  • Triage phone calls and direct to provider when necessary.
  • Recognizes and responds to emergencies.
  • Assists provider with translating (English/Spanish) if applicable.
  • Assists with training on various aspects of job duties with select employees.
  • All other necessary duties based on operational needs.

Qualifications:

  • Must be certified as a Medical Assistant.
  • Must be bilingual English
  • Spanish.
  • Active BLS certification.
  • Vascular and/or Wound Care experience, preferred but not required.
  • Available to travel to different locations

Essential Functions:

  • Able to service 20+ patient needs in one day.
  • Able to communicate well with patients.
  • Must be able to commute to multiple locations in the course of the working day/week, based on staffing needs.
  • Positively serve as a resource to department staff as well as other members of the team as needed.
  • Must be able to remain in stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Constantly positions self to address patient care needs.
  • Frequently move equipment and lift appropriate weight up to 50 pounds.
  • Help and position patients weighing up to 400 pounds.
