    The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Government & Community Relations (GCR) Communications Specialist is responsible for supporting communications activities that promote the policy and advocacy priorities of the organization, as well as WWP's ongoing work with the federal government, and military and veterans service organizations. This position collaborates closely with the Grassroots and Constituent Affairs teams, supporting them in communicating the outcomes of WWP's advocacy efforts, programs, and services to governmental bodies at both federal and local levels.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Maintain strong connections and lines of communication between Government Relations, Public Relations, and Marketing teams.
    • Develop compelling communication and public relations materials to support and promote key initiatives such as annual fly-ins, Women Warrior Summits, and various other events, campaigns, and activities.
    • Build and maintain a calendar of internal and external events and communications opportunities relevant to WWP's legislative priorities. Develop communications as needed to ensure awareness of WWP's impact in these areas.
    • Ensure the continual refinement of protocols and processes for all GCR functions. Maintain up-to-date lists of key media outlets covering politics, veteran's issues, and the DC space, as well as comprehensive lists of key Congressional and VA committees, agencies, and individuals.
    • Represent GCR Communications by attending internal meetings to ensure awareness of organization-wide goals, campaigns, and activities, and their potential impact on GCR.
    • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure the WWP website, both external-facing and internal-facing, is regularly updated. Identify opportunities to expand and enhance content development on these platforms.
    • Build and maintain a "story bank" of warriors who can speak to Congress, the media, and other audiences on different policy issues.
    • Support Fly-In and Women Warriors Summit events and activities in the DC area, including serving as key contact for administrative/logistical support.
    • Coordinate logistics for interviews with WWP staff, leaders, and warriors and serve as first point of contact for GCR Communications.
    • Support the development, scheduling, and implementation of various media events and activities, both in DC and nationwide, aimed at spotlighting WWP policy issues and fostering relationships with lawmakers and media outlets. Work closely with WWP Public Relations team to ensure coordination of media relations as part of the organization's public awareness strategy.
    • Monitor social media and help develop social media posts for WWP's legislative advocacy channels.
    • Develop a focused list of influential figures in veteran public policy and collaborate with internal staff to devise a strategy for engaging with these influencers effectively.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Fluent in AP style with a strong attention to detail, including in-depth knowledge of spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

    • Ability to travel, work outside regular hours, including weekends, as needed.

    EXPERIENCE

    Requirements

    • Three years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or related field.
    • Familiarity with government relations, advocacy, or legislative processes.

    Preferences

    • Military experience from any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
    • Two years of experience in advocacy, policy, and/or legislative affairs.
    • Two years of experience in copywriting, editing, photography, and videography e.g., Adobe Premiere and Photoshop.
    • One year of experience using project management software, preferably
    • One year of experience working in the nonprofit or veteran services sector.

    EDUCATION

    Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, business, political science, or related field. Equivalent combination of applicable education, training, certification, and experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • General office environment; temperature controlled.
