Description
Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer for Kuiper Tooling, you will support the program on the transition from development into stable production. You will develop, design, analyze, and implement custom tooling and equipment required for assembling and testing the satellite. You will need to convert the requests from various teams into systems that are easy to use, cost effective, and accurate. In addition, you will be responsible for project management, cost estimate and scheduling.
This is a fast-paced, intellectually challenging position, and youll work with leaders in multiple technology areas. Youll have relentlessly high standards for yourself and everyone you work with, and youll be constantly looking for ways to improve your products performance, quality and cost. We want individuals who are ready for this challenge and want to reach beyond what is possible today. Everyone on the team needs to be entrepreneurial, wear many hats and work in a highly collaborative environment. We will need to tackle problems that span a variety of domains.
Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Key job responsibilities
Work with vehicle, manufacturing, integration and operation teams to define and conceive creative solutions to unique problems.
Design fixtures, mechanisms, and other types of hardware to support safe, efficient, and reliable testing of satellite components.
Utilize engineering fundamentals to validate the design including hand-calculations and Finite Element Analysis.
Geometric design using 3D CAD (NX) for parts and assemblies and 2D engineering drawings to communicate design intent.
Project manage execution of design including budgeting, scheduling and working with manufacturing teams and vendors.
Work directly with manufacturing and operation teams on commissioning designs on production floor.

About the team
The Kuiper Tooling team is responsible for designing and commissioning the hard tooling, mechanisms, jigs, and integrated machines used for satellite production. This is a team of engineers and support technicians that provide in-house unique and creative solutions on tight timelines.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $77,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
