Under general direction the Custodian performs various custodial/janitorial functions to maintain a high standard of cleanliness of the assigned City facility, ensuring all areas of the building are clean, sanitary, properly maintained, and in orderly condition, while displaying a professional, courteous, and helpful nature.


Principal Duties:


  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub and wax floors.
  • Clean, dust and polish furniture; sanitize counters and other surface areas; including dusting mechanical devices, such as monitors, desktops, printers, and any other devices; and cleaning windows, doors, glasses and mirrors, as needed.
  • Clean and sanitize restroom and breakroom facilities and fixtures; and resupply soap dispensers and restock paper products.
  • Empty trash containers and dispose of garbage.
  • Adhere to OSHA standards in relation to the proper use of chemicals and equipment involved in the daytoday completion of custodial cleaning tasks.
  • Adhere to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving and operating equipment.
  • Maintain inventory and request cleaning supplies and materials needed to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Secure equipment and supplies and protect against pilferage, loss, theft, or abuse.
  • Perform periodic inspections of equipment to detect and prevent injuries and or damage; ensure equipment is maintained and repaired as needed.
  • Prepare rooms for special events or meetings, to include moving and arranging table, chairs and other equipment; and performing setup and cleanup activities.
  • Remove refuse and debris from adjacent grounds, parking lot, and/or annex areas of assigned City building.
  • Secure building to ensure proper building security at all times. Lock and secure building at end of shift.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


Required:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Ability to maintain regular and reliable attendance. May be required to work evening and/or weekend shifts. Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance and safety procedures. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Basic knowledge of acceptable cleaning standards related to cleaning and maintenance of facilities. Ability to operate custodial/janitorial equipment such as buffers, carpet cleaners, floor strippers and other applicable cleaning equipment.

Knowledge of the use of chemicals, structure, and properties of substances used in the daily operation of custodial duties, production techniques and disposal methods.

Knowledge of machines and equipment commonly used to perform custodial duties. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work.

Ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions requiring the ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work while responding to interruptions and changing priorities.

Initiative and ability to work with mínimal direction; and complete assignments independently. Required to perform daily duties regularly. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and bend or stand for long periods while performing cleaning and general maintenance tasks.
