    The Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Health Care System (VAHCS) is seeking a Deputy Chief of Medicine who will provide administrative and programmatic leadership and clinical care to oversee and accomplish its mission in clinical care, education, and research. The Ralph H. Johnson VA HCS is a level 1a (high complexity) facility with an academic partner of the Medical University of South Carolina. Our VAMC provides Veteran care in coastal South Carolina and Georgia with the main facility in Charleston, SC. The physician chosen will play an integral role in the management, growth, and future direction of our large specialty medicine service. The medicine service is responsible for the medicine subspecialties with inpatient and outpatient consultation and procedural care, dermatology, hospital and ICU/CCU medicine, and an emergency department. Responsibilities will include working with the Chief of Medicine in an administrative leadership role to assure excellence in our 3-tier mission of clinical care, education, and research. The physician would be anticipated to provide clinical care in an area of general internal medicine, an internal medicine subspecialty, dermatology, or in emergency medicine as part of non-administrative work. Protected time for clinical or basic research can be supported based on interest and previous work. A part-time clinical, research, or educational component at the Medical University of South Carolina, is feasible.

    The Deputy Chief of Medicine must be skillful in interpersonal relationships often dealing with employees, managers, and other service lines using advanced consultation and problem-solving skills. The Deputy Chief of Medicine must have skills to coordinate the efforts of multiple program elements across a complex system.

    Candidates must hold a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree with a strong preference for board certification / eligibility in the fields of their training and practice. Additional management and leadership training preferred. The appropriate physician will have experience and training supporting requirements for an academic appointment. The Deputy Chief of Medicine will provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for the medicine service, ensuring the highest standards of patient care, safety, and satisfaction. Will foster a culture of collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement among medical staff, nurturing an environment that promotes innovation and research. The incumbent will have overall medical oversight of the inpatient units; outpatient clinics; emergency department; patient experience; quality of care; and quality metrics (for example, readmission and mortality). The candidate should be able to demonstrate knowledge in caring for the Veteran population, the ability to work with an interdisciplinary team, and demonstrate excellent customer service skills.

    Additional Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

    1. Collaborating with colleagues in developing, implementing, and evaluating philosophy, objectives, policies, and standards essential for delivering optimal care to patients.
    2. Mentors and supports physicians, nurturing their professional growth and development. Guide the development and implementation of programs such as medical practice, professional standards, personnel issues, quality, and performance improvement.
    3. Responsible for recruiting and hiring clinicians; monitoring provider performance and medical outcomes. Recommends clinical privileges for each member of the service and engages in clinical service activities in his/her area of specialization.
    4. Represents the institution in medical conferences, seminars, and professional associations to stay up to date of the latest advancements. Collaborates with other service chiefs and program managers at VAMC. The Deputy Chief of Medicine can sit on several important committees; both at the medical center and VA regional levels. Compensation will be commensurate with years of experience, board certification, and subspecialty. The anticipated salary range is $300,000 - $400,000 plus benefits). The position is eligible for incentives to defray relocation expenses. Locality Details: Ralph H. Johnson VA can be found in beautiful downtown Charleston.
