    We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Outside Machine department. This position specifically is located in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for five Outside Machinists J1 - J4.

    Shift : ALL
    Security Clearance : No Clearance
    Outside Machinist J4

    Education Requirements

    Typically has a High School diploma or equivalent plus relevant work experience as noted below:

    ESSENTIAL JOB KNOWLEDG E
    • Must be able to identify parts, read tech manuals, spec items and blueprints.
    • Must be able to furnish sizes and clearance and also recommendations to supervisor.
    • Must be able to work on any equipment below with no supervision.
    • Must have four plus years directly related experience in a Shipyard Environment.
    • Able to read and use tech manuals and blueprints and specification items.
    Essential Functions/Duties:

    1. Experienced in machinery overhaul and installation and testing of all the following:
    2. Winches (Electric driven* Electro hydraulic)
    3. Anchor windlasses
    4. Steering gear
    5. Air compressors
    6. Pump and motor alignments
    7. Valve repairs
    8. Diesel engine repairs
    9. Hydraulic trouble shooting * repairs
    10. Reduction gear repairs
    11. Generator repairs
    12. Boat davit repairs
    13. Bearing fit-up & installation
    14. Gas turbine repairs
    15. Louvers
    16. Aircraft Elevators
    17. Underwater Hull Strainer Plates
    18. Cranes
    19. Brakes
    20. Resilient Mounts
    21. Emitter Belts
    22. OD Box Removal/Install
    23. Sliding Pad Eyes
    24. Rast Track
    25. Propulsion experience of the following:
    26. Shafting repairs and alignment, fixed and controllable pitch
    27. Propellers removed and installed
    28. Rudders repair and installed
    29. Tool requirements:
    30. Operate grinder fixed and portable
    31. Operate drill presses fixed and portable
    32. Fixed presses
    33. Porta powers
    34. Hydraulic jacks
    35. Torches and torque wrenches
    36. Assorted sizes of combination wrenches
    37. socket sets
    38. slip joint pliers
    39. adjustable wrenches,
    40. wire pliers,
    41. hammers-ball pean, flat head, small mall
    42. screw drivers (flat and phillips)
    43. vise grips,
    44. 6 scale- 12 tape measure
    45. snap ring pliers.
    46. Micrometers, dial indicators, calipers,
    47. pipe wrench,
    48. punch set and chisels
    49. Other tools as identified and determined as needed.

    Visual Requirements: The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines where the seeing job is at or within arms reach or performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by electricians, technicians, service people, painters, mechanics, etc.

    Must be able to climb on and around ships and walk to other yard areas and requires extended periods of standing and walking (75%). Inspections and work may require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding and observing co-workers using tools and equipment. Lifting/carrying tools and parts weighing up to 50 lbs. on frequent basis. Standing, bending, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, handling, finger dexterity, feeling, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing required. Selecting appropriate tools for jobs, as per trade classification. Works in tight, confined work spaces on board ship and is exposed to varied temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions, fumes, odors and dust, vibrations from ship and hand tools.

    WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

    This position reports to Shop Foreman/General Foreman and/or works with Crew Lead. This position develops and maintains a positive working relationship with other Machinists and supports a team approach in the pursuit of common company goals.

    PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Assures that a Work Authorization Form (WAF) ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished, no work will be accomplished without a WAF posted at location of repairs.
    2. Assures that any other safety issues are complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished (Example: special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work related jobs, breathing apparatus with correct cartridges, etc).
    3. Assures that you are trained or qualified for the work you are assigned to do (Example: JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical/mechanical repairs and etc.).
    4. Assures that personnel are working as safely and as productively as possible maintaining quality control at all times.
    5. Assures that a 30 minute cool down period has been accomplished in hot work areas.
    6. Assures that the job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure.
    7. Complete repairs or installation(s) as assigned with no supervision.
    ACCOUNTABILITY

    Responsible for effective, efficient and safe accomplishment of all assigned tasks. Accountable to Foreman/General Foreman and customer for Safety, Quality, Cost and Schedule.

    UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    Occasional weekend work and / or extended hours. May require up to 30% travel.
