Job Objective:


Under the management of the Clinical Nutrition Manager; performs work with a high degree of accuracy and skill in the provision of optimal nutritional care for patients and the other service population.

The provision of optimal nutrition care includes nutrition assessments, development of care plans, nutrition education, food service, and nutrition consulting services.

Participates in multidisciplinary case management activities and performance improvement projects. Actively participates in Departmental Performance Improvement and Patient Satisfaction goals.

The Dietitian will work together with the employees of the department to provide optimal environmental services to the patients, visitors, and staff to ensure the healing and well-being of each individual.

The Dietitian will perform any other related tasks as assigned.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Identifies, prioritizes, screens & adds orders as per patient information as outlined by protocol.
  • Completes assessments/consults as per the Nutrition Care Process guidelines.
  • Recommends appropriate nutrition intervention & informs the care giver about the same.
  • Documents all the patients seen in the multi disciplinary care plan.
  • Orders follow up on patients as per risk criteria.
  • Continue to monitor & evaluate the effectiveness of the nutrition intervention.
  • Provides nutrition education to patients based on consults & or patient request.
  • Individual privileges to make diet modifications, supplement diets: enteral nutrition & TPN modifications & order vitamins, minerals & certain labs.
  • Cover weekends as per rotation to ensure consults & assessments are completed.
  • Ensure that productivity standards are met. (>70% of time spent in direct patient care)
  • Serves as a resource for nutrition information for the medical staff, the hospital employees, the patients, and the community.
  • Participates as a team member with performance improvement projects, either departmental or multidisciplinary.
  • Is involved in the multidisciplinary case management approach to patient care and outcomes.
  • Works collaboratively with other members of the dietary department to provide the appropriate meals for all patients in the service population.
  • Participates in nutrition educational and training programs.
  • Provides guidance for patients and/or the dietary staff in the preparation of meals/education materials to include cultural diversity.
  • Complies with the established standards of sanitation in the performance of the job duties.
  • Adheres to established guidelines for the provision of nutritional care.

Non-Essential Duties:


  • Maintains productivity within guidelines of the performance objectives.
  • Takes the initiative to seek challenges in the work environment and in continuing education.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Clinical Dietitian.

Education and Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelors Degree.
  • Current registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Competencies/ Evidence of Current Clinical Competencies:

  • 12 hours minimum of continuing education in courses related to clinical nutrition/ dietetics.
  • 6 monthly ongoing competencies by the manager/director will be documented & provided in the employee files.

Key Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Work is ordinarily performed in an office and/or institutional kitchen environment, in a limited work space.
  • Extensive direct patient contact conducted in the patient rooms or other patient care areas.
  • Extensive standing and walking for majority of day.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs.

Education and Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

Minimum of a Bachelors Degree.
Current registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
