    Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.

    VAis currently seeking Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) to join our Surgery Service team. Working together, we provide outstanding health care to the Veterans in our service area. The position will be based at the Truman
    VAMedical Center in Columbia, MO. The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) safely provides anesthesia to surgical patients for a variety of operations and/or procedures.

    The CRNA performs pre-anesthesia patient evaluations/histories, prepares anesthesia plans, delivers all forms of anesthesia and follows up on anesthesia cases.

    The CRNA will consult and collaborate with the entire surgical care team. Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of anesthesia equipment.

    Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to translate the principles of professional nursing practice in the care of assigned patients to provide appropriate care.

    Ability to perform a pre-anesthetic patient history and physical, which includes collecting pre-operative consults and data. Ability to formulate an anesthetic plan and describe the anesthetic risks, benefits and options to the patient.

    Ability to administer inhalation, regional, intravenous, local, and topical anesthetics and to detect unfavorable reactions to continuously evaluate the patient's physical status.

    Ability to respond to emergency situations by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids and drugs, and using appropriate resuscitation procedures for patient care.

    Ability to provide patient care that is abreast of changing concepts and advancements in the profession. Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment for improvement of services for patient care. Ability to practice nurse anesthesia with colleagues and peers utilizing a collaborative team concept of anesthesia care. Ability to perform IV's.

    Outstanding interpersonal skills are essential, as the successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary staff in the delivery of excellent health care to our nation's Veterans.

    Basic Requirements:

    United States Citizenship:

    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with
    VAPolicy.

    English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C.

    7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.

    Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
    The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

    The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration.

    In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

    OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing.

    Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the
    VAalong with a copy of the MSN transcript.

    VAHandbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

    Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

    Certification.

    (1) On and after May 4, 1993, certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists is a requirement for employment.

    This requirement does not apply to non-certified nurse anesthetists employed by
    VAas a nurse anesthetist prior to May 4, 1993 and continuously thereafter.

    Any nurse anesthetist who leaves
    VAemployment or vacates the nurse anesthetist occupation for another
    VAposition, must meet the current requirement of certification for re-appointment as a nurse anesthetist.

    The CCNA and the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists have designated the AANA's web site as a display agent for their information.(2) Nurse Anesthetists will maintain recertification by meeting the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetist's requirements as a condition of employment.


    Grade Determinations:
    The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse II
    • A BSN with approximately 2 3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2 3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1 2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
    Nurse III
    • Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2 3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2 3 years of nursing practice/experience.

    Note regarding MSN degrees:
    If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required

    Physical Requirements:
    Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers & both hands; walking & standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental & muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far visions correctable in one eye to 20/20 & to 20/40 in the other.
