    Job Summary

    Performs a wide variety of radiographic examinations and related procedures to produce quality images for use in diagnostic evaluations. Uses both general Radiographic equipment and Fluoroscopy equipment. Follows all XR procedures according to the department's procedures and protocols. Utilizes ALARA principles and appropriate infection control techniques to ensure a safe work environment for all employees and patients.

    Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
    • Performs a variety of duties related to radiologic examinations.
    • Performs radiographic exams on all body areas such as head, chest, spine, abdomen, extremities, etc.
    • Receives orders for designated radiologic examinations and prepares room; checking to assure that all required equipment, supplies are on hand.
    • Positions patients on table or in appropriate standing/sitting posture. Required to lift, move, position and stabilize totally incapacitated patients. Arranges, attaches and/or adjusts immobilization or supportive devices, such as sandbags, pillows, binders and related appliances
    • Checks and adjusts for proper voltage, amperage, duration of exposure, etc.; making any required computations and calibrations. Activates machinery and takes required number of exposures.
    • Transports portable equipment to inpatient units or Operating Room and takes required exposures at bedside.
    • Assists in administration of opaque media orally, by injection, by enema, etc.; preparation of sterile trays, special timing of medications and/or filming, precise position of patient and equipment to capture remote or difficult to obtain highlights, use of special ancillary equipment, etc.
    • Maintains equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition. When using C-arm equipment in the Operating Room during surgical procedures, follows all regulations/procedures dealing with sterile techniques and related matters.
    • Maintains radiation exposure levels to minimize patient dose. Adjusts x-ray equipment for proper centering, angle of exposure to designated body area. Arrange shielding devices
    • Stands behind a protective barrier or wears a lead apron to meet Alara requirements. Protect visitors and the general public from unnecessary radiation exposures.
    • Explains procedures to be performed to each patient. (+) Gives preparatory instructions. Provides reassurance to anxious patients. (+) Reads reports to authorized staff over phones. (+) Answers inquiries and provides requested assistance on matters dealing with Ultrasound, CT Scan, Nuclear Medicine and MRI services. Maintains high level of quality control.
    Performs Related duties:
    • Carries out prescribed preventative maintenance procedures on instruments/equipment; making minor adjustments or repairs. (+) Refers defective or inoperable equipment for repairs/replacement. Provides a high level of customer service.
    • Assists in training and orientation of new employees.
    • Provides proper record keeping and required documentation.
    • Completes STAT reports and delivers to proper personnel.
    • Attends 66% of staff meetings and in-service training
    • Assists clerical support staff with patient schedules, recording keeping and related tasks. (+) Assists in assuring that adequate supplies and equipment are on hand, when needed.
    • Performs a variety of duties related to radiologic examinations.

    • As required, transports patients to and from the exam/waiting room in a wheelchair.
    • Positions patients on table or in appropriate standing/sitting posture. Required to lift, move, position and stabilize totally incapacitated patients. Arranges, attaches and/or adjusts immobilizations or supportive devices, such as pillows.
    • Checks and adjusts for proper voltage, amperage, duration of exposure, etc.; making any required computations and calibrations.
    • Activates machinery and takes a required number of exposures.
    • Repositions patient between exposures.
    • Processes films using automated equipment.
    • Reviews film for quality and readability and takes steps required to assure that quality control standards are met.
    • Maintains radiation safety.
    • Maintains radiation exposure levels to minimize patient dose.
    • Adjusts X-ray equipment for proper centering, angle of exposure to designated body area.
    • Arranges shielding devices.
    • Stands behind a protective barrier or wears a lead apron to meet Alara requirements.
    • Protects visitors and the general public from unnecessary radiation exposures.
    • Maintains high level of quality control.
    • Maintains equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition.
    • Carries out prescribed preventative maintenance procedures on instruments/equipment; making minor adjustments or repairs.
    • Maintains communication.
    • Explains procedures to be performed to each patient.
    • Collects patient data and materials.
    • Obtains health history and baseline patient data from the patients.
    • Performs routine physical assessment functions such as blood pressures, temperatures, pulses, visual tests, EKG's, pulmonary function tests, etc.
    • Collects urine and blood samples in accordance with established protocols.
    • Uses discretion in disseminating patient information to outside sources.
    • Performs simple lab tests (CBC, glucose, HKL, etc.) as per policies and procedures manual.
    • Reviews patient chart prior to visit for completeness.
    • Provides entries to patient records as necessary in preparation for provider review.
    • Monitors return of lab/test results. Assures all test results have been completed and are in the medical record.
    • Assists with patient care as appropriate.
    • Delivers on-site care for clients as directed by Medical Providers.
    • Assists in the delivery of patient care such as suturing, wound care, debridement, etc.
    • Telephones callbacks to patients as directed by the provider, and in accordance with established protocol.
    • Maintains clinical areas.
    • Responsible for restocking exam rooms as necessary with medical instruments and other medical supplies.
    • Upon completion of each patient encounter, prepare the exam room for the next patient.
    • Notifies Office Manager in a timely manner regarding office supplies which need to be ordered/replenished.
    • Responsible for restocking of medications in the patient care rooms.
    • Sterilizes instruments as necessary.
    • Monitors and arranges for proper disposal of lab and medical supplies (i.e. cultures, injectables/medical waste).
    • Performs quality controls and maintains records for lab equipment.
    • Maintains knowledge of CLIA requirements.
    • Maintains communication.
    • Explains procedures to be performed to each patient.
    • Gives preparatory instructions and provides reassurance to anxious patients.
    • Refers to Office Manager defective or inoperable equipment for repairs/replacement.
    • Occasionally deals with uncooperative patients and/or distraught family members.
    • Observes the patient's condition and brings any unusual circumstances to the attention of the supervisor.
    • Is aware of limitations of Radiologic Technologist; practices and functions within those limits.
    • Provides clerical support.
    • Maintains accurate medical records. Schedules patients for treatment when necessary.
    • Completes medical forms for providers review and signature (i.e. Disability forms, handicapped etc.)
    • Schedules referrals with specialist Physicians for patients upon the request of the Medical Provider.
    • Provides clerical support including but not limited to the answering of phones, assisting clients with paperwork, scheduling appointments, etc.
    • Take initiative.
    • Attentive to Clinical Site Environment.

      Monitors reception area and clinical space for cleanliness, neatness, and order.
    • Monitors reception area and clinical space for patient flow efficiency. Update patients regarding provider's schedule, etc. (Reason for delay.)
    • Monitors patient needs and comfort level (offer beverages, magazines, etc.)
    • Assists in handling incoming phone calls.
    • Assists in refiling charts after checking for completion.
    • Greets incoming visitors.
    • Assumes responsibility for professional self-growth.
    • Evaluates strengths and weaknesses and seeks guidance from the supervisor.
    • Implements self-improvement action plan based on annual evaluations and feedback developed with the Office Manager.
    • Keeps abreast of changes in the medical field and implements the changes as approved.
    • Demonstrates excellent communication skills, including listening skills, verbal skills and written skills.
    • Gives preparatory instructions and provides reassurance to anxious patients.
    • Refers to Office Manager defective or inoperable equipment for repairs/replacement.

    Qualifications

    Qualifications:

    Educational / Minimum Requirements:

    Graduate from an accredited Radiologic Technology program

    State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:

    Radiologic Technologist registered through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, (ARRT) and licensed in the state of Connecticut. Advanced certification in CT or Mammography is highly recommended.

    Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:

    General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Healthcare Provider CPR from American Heart Association or Professional Rescuer CPR by American Red Cross or other similar programs deemed appropriate by management. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.

    Special Requirements:

    Registered or registry eligible (new grads must obtain registry prior to employment)

    Physical Requirements:

    On feet most of the day with lifting greater than 50 lbs. occasionally and routinely up to 35 lbs. daily. Physical agility including but limited to: bending, stooping, walking, reaching, standing, pulling, pushing and twisting. Hearing and sight corrected to normal. Ability to verbalize so the average person can comprehend. Manipulate radiology equipment and access patient's response to procedure.

    Must be willing to be floated or reassigned to another department, unit, office, or location as needed.

    Work Environment:

    Radiation exposure; patient element, chemical fume exposure; frequent changes in lighting levels, room temperature varies.

    Cognitive Requirements:

    Excellent oral communication skills, literate in English, excellent reading and mathematical skills, ability to read, comprehend and execute written and oral instructions, good organizational and decision making skills and good writing skills.
