Description
Metal and machine workers set up and operate machines that cut, shape, and form metal materials or pieces. Operate conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Set up machines and monitor them for unusual sound or vibration
  • Lift material onto machines, manually or with a hoist
  • Operate metal molding, casting, or coremaking machines
  • Work from blueprints, sketches, or computeraided design (CAD) or computeraided manufacturing (CAM) files
  • Set up, operate, and tear down manual, automatic, or computer numeric controlled (CNC) machine tools
  • Calculate dimensions using measuring instruments
  • Install, align, secure, and adjust cutting tools and workpieces
  • Turn, mill, drill, shape, and grind machine parts to specifications
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines
  • Adjust cutting machine settings to account for irregularities
  • Stop machines and remove finished products
  • Test and measure finished products
  • Remove and replace dull cutting tools
  • Document production numbers in a computer database
  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawing, manuals, specification, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or outof tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications.
  • Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.

Pay:
$ $35.00 per hour
