POSITION PURPOSE:

The job of Groundskeeper is done for the purpose/s of maintaining the physical plant exterior grounds and equipment in a condition of operating excellence so the full educational use of it may be made at all times; maintain exterior free of snow and ice; determining repairs that can be accomplished by facilities staff or need to be referred to a contractor; ensuring availability of supplies and equipment are required for job assignments; and ensuring assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Plant, weed, rake and water the grounds; transplant and mulch as necessary.
  • Prunes annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees using the appropriate techniques according to the plant.
  • Edges, mows, fertilizes lawns, and monitors the watering needs of the grounds; ensures efficient operation of irrigation systems.
  • Implements landscape improvement/renovation projects using appropriate plants and landscape materials.
  • Calculates amounts and applies pesticides according to industry safety procedures; understands and follows material safety data sheets and labels and required emergency treatments for specific chemicals.
  • Identifies common landscape weeds and applies control measures.
  • Maintains pathways and roads, patching pot holes, cleaning drains, and sweeping debris.
  • Installs and removes outdoor signs, parking and traffic control barriers, and overhead banners as required.
  • Uses leaf blowers, turfvacs, other tools or hands to remove trash and debris from grounds.
  • Operate a variety power equipment such as, but not limited to, edger, hedge trimmers, chain saws, aerial lifts, forklifts, snowplows and tractor/loaders as necessary.
  • Sets up the stadium and athletic field for sporting events; assists with marking athletic fields.
  • Assists in the custodial maintenance of the stadium including athletic field and bathrooms after events.
  • Performs repairs to equipment and irrigation sprinklers; may assist in the installation and maintenance of drip irrigation systems; may repair impact sprinkler heads in lawn.
  • Erects scaffolding, rigging and ladders as necessary in a manner consistent with safety codes.
  • Shovels and removes snow and ice from designated areas such as roofs, sidewalks, and entryways as required.
  • Repair mowers, tractors, and other small engines.
  • Maintain appropriate service and repair records.
  • Responds to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service.
  • Procures equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items.
  • Transports various items (e.g. tools, equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.
  • Assists other staff members as required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Team player required. Must be able to interact with peers, management, and administration in a constantly evolving environment for the purpose of completing projects/work orders in a timely manner.
  • Direct the work of student workers.
  • Ability to use a computer. Competent in Microsoft Outlook and Office Suite.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SPECIALIZED KNOW-HOW AND SKILLS:


  • Possess a valid (Class D) Wisconsin driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to complete the following training as required but not limited to: hazardous communication, forklift and aerial lift operation, lock out tag out, fall arrest, confined space, MSDS, asbestos and lead identification, ladder safety, emergency evacuation, respirator training.
  • Ability to mentor fellow staff to enhance their performance, development and productivity.
  • Ability to work in fast paced, rapidly changing environment and a STRONG work ethic and desire to learn.
  • Frequently required to work under inclement weather conditions.
  • Normal job schedule is first shift Mon Fri. Ability to work variable schedules including weekends, nights, and day shifts as required to complete the work in a safe, proper and timely manner with little disruption as possible to the campus communit
