    Job Description

    Identifies, registers, and maintains records of all cancer patients by utilizing the tumor registry data system. Analyzes registry data; disseminates information in accordance with professional ethics.
    1. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Identifies cases of reportable diseases, obtains information from patient medical records, codes information relevant to registered tumor patients, and maintains records of living patients. Organizes input and maintains patient computer data to ensure conformance to tumor registry operational standards; preserves the confidentiality and security of patient data stored in the tumor registry files. Assembles and disseminates tumor registry data. Coordinates activities of the tumor registry with those of the cancer committee and tumor committee in developing criteria for patient care evaluations. Assists researchers in cancer related studies and research projects and provides guidance in the use of the tumor registry data system. Participates in educational activities of local, state, and national tumor registrar. Assists in care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, Inservice meetings, and workshops. Attends meetings as required. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
    2. Prolonged periods of standing, walking, or sitting while on duty. Lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 10-15 pounds with or without assistance. Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required. Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast paced environment. Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests. Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. Maybe subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions need to be taken is essential. Climate control an ambient temperature variances may be experienced. Exposure to limited amounts of hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes are a possibility. Hours of duty may be irregular or unexpectedly extended due to emergency circumstances. Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.

    Qualifications

    Work Experience:
    Previous medical records experience required. Computer and good verbal and written skills required.

    License & Cert:
    Certification as RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) AND CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar) or ODS (Oncology Data Specialist). required.

    Education:
    High school diploma or equivalent and courses in medical records technology required. Previous medical records experience required.
