Definition:


Under the direction of the Director of Teaching and Learning, the Program Coordinator I of Early Language and Literacy (P-5) is responsible for providing integrated pedagogical support for accelerating language development and literacy outcomes for diverse student groups.

The Program Coordinator I of Early Language and Literacy (P-5) works collaboratively with school sites and districts providing professional development activities for educators across the region.

Facilitation includes collaborative network sessions, learning walks, and classroom coaching for academic coaches, teachers, and administrators through professional development and support.

This position will serve schools and districts included in the Monterey County Literacy Coach and Reading Specialist Educator Training (LCRSET) grant.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The following is a list of duties that is representative of the position that includes but is not limited to:

  • Support and develop school literacy plans, including identifying metrics to measure progress toward goals and actions
  • Develop the knowledge and skills necessary, including literacy knowledge and leadership skills, to support literacy coaches
  • Develop knowledge and skills in literacy instruction, including implementation of the ELA/ELD Framework, the development and implementation of culturally responsive curriculum and instruction, and the use of data to identify and support effective instruction and struggling students and diverse learners, including early learners, English Learner (EL) students, pupils with disabilities, and pupils with dyslexia
  • Develop knowledge and skills for appropriate identification and use of screening instruments, assessment strategies, and evidencebased literacy instruction, including biliteracy instruction, for diverse learners
  • Model intensive intervention strategies for pupils struggling with literacy, including tutoring and small group strategies, and strategies for target pupil groups based on data
  • Support and develop family literacy plans that identify literacy and biliteracy goals, activities, and roles for all family members, as well as promote the availability of the State Seal of Biliteracy
  • Support the development of multilingual, multicultural learning environments designed to accelerate 21st century teaching and learning
  • Implement and enact all LCRSET grant guidelines, including but not limited to attending meetings, providing coaching to coordinating schools, delivering professional development, and following grant reporting requirements
  • Provide direction and assistance to educators through professional learning networks, coaching, mentoring, and serving as a content expert to assist schools and districts with initiatives focused on improving the development of structured literacy and reading success in grades P
  • Support the vertical articulation of early literacy skills in preschool, transitional kindergarten, and kindergarten in school communities
  • Plan, organize, coordinate and implement continuous improvement processes for schools and districts to accelerate student learning and achievement
  • Create effective communication networks to gather, access, and disseminate pertinent information to all education partners
  • Serve as a liaison and coordinate communications, activities and information related to language and literacy between County Offices of Education, school districts, outside organizations and the public
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to programs, budgets, school support, partnerships, meetings and assigned activities
  • Oversee Educational Services events and activities to support countywide implementation of curriculum and instruction projects and goals
  • Train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned personnel as required
  • Maintains awareness of and ensures compliance with relevant State and Federal laws and regulations, Monterey County Office of Education Board Policies, Superintendent Policies and Administrative Regulations
