BASIC FUNCTION:Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform unskilled and skilled work in the inspection, diagnosis, minor repair, and routine maintenance of school buses and a variety of large and small diesel, gas, and alternative fueled District vehicles and equipment; perform required inspections and preventive maintenance of buses and other District vehicles.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:


Vehicle Service Assistant - The Vehicle Service Assistant provides support to the department in performing cleaning and basic repairs to school buses and district vehicles.

Vehicle Service Worker
  • The Vehicle Service Worker is responsible for routine maintenance and repair of school buses and district vehicles.

Examples of Duties:


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:


Perform unskilled and skilled work in the inspection, diagnosis, minor repair, and routine maintenance of school buses and a variety of large and small diesel, gas, and alternative fueled District vehicles and equipment to assure proper and safe operating condition; perform routine preventive maintenance on District vehicles.

Perform scheduled preventative maintenance inspections; assure compliance with California Highway Patrol school bus maintenance regulations and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Assist vehicle maintenance personnel with a variety of activities; assist in the adjustment, repair, and maintenance of brake systems; assist with diagnosing and repairing electrical problems.

Replace or perform minor repairs on vehicle accessories such as latches, light bulbs, switches, and handles; replace hoses and belts as needed.

E


Inspect, repair, and maintain tires to assure proper operating condition; change and rotate tires as appropriate; assure proper inflation levels.

Assist in performing minor and major tune-ups on District vehicles and equipment; such as replacing alternators, radiators and starters as necessary.

Drain and replenish fluid levels, such as water, oil, coolant, and fuel as requested; replace oil and air filters as needed; service batteries; lubricate gearboxes; drain and refill crankcases.

Prepare and maintain a variety of written or electronic logs and records, such as maintenance activities, repairs, and assigned activities.

Operate a variety of equipment, such as hand and power tools, lifts, jacks, stands, tire machines, testers, and meters, and diagnostic equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.

Pick up parts from vendors as needed. E


Communicate with District personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities, and resolve issues or concerns related to vehicle maintenance and assigned activities.

Steam clean District vehicles and equipment as assigned. E

Perform minor welding repairs as assigned. E

Maintain tools, equipment, machinery, and work area for District vehicles in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. E

Respond to emergency repair needs as requested. E

Perform the duties of a Vehicle Service Assistant as assigned or needed. E

Drive a vehicle to conduct work. E

Participate in ongoing training and staff development.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from high school (or equivalent) and one year of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair.


LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Incumbents must have an acceptable driving record and must qualify for insurability by the District's insurance carrier.
The following licenses or other requirements must be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment:

  • Valid California Class B or Class A commercial driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements.
  • US Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate.
