    Enginner – Traffic Design at Virginia Department of Transportation

    Our Location and Design Division is in search of an Engineer – Traffic Design to join our ranks. We are looking for a dynamic individual to create, handle, and generate traffic control device plans for various roadway projects, ensuring they align with set budgets and timelines, while complying with federal and state standards, guidelines, and policies. The chosen candidate will also stay updated on design technologies and construction practices, providing exceptional customer service.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Teamwork and Customer Service: Demonstrating customer service excellence, coordinating information flow verbally and in writing.
    • Analysis and Technical Reporting: Interpreting engineering data, preparing clear reports and recommendations.
    • Manage Assigned Activities: Planning, scheduling, and coordinating engineering program activities to meet deliverables within specified scopes and timelines.
    • Design of Traffic Control Devices: Creating plans for traffic control devices, ensuring compliance with standards and guidelines, and updating specifications when necessary.
    • Computer and CADD Skills: Utilizing design software and maintaining project information in various programs.
    • Special Assignments: Overseeing special initiatives and representing VDOT on committees.
    • Engineering Process Management: Implementing VDOT policies in project development and delivery.
    • Communication: Establishing effective communication channels with various stakeholders.
    • Project Engineering: Managing projects, ensuring quality, and providing status updates.
    • Technical Guidance and Leadership: Providing guidance to consultants and ensuring compliance with requirements.
    • Task and Time Management: Managing tasks, adjusting priorities, and ensuring timely performance.
    • Quality Control: Maintaining project quality and participating in peer reviews.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments.
    • Proficiency in MS office and traffic engineer design software.
    • Understanding of civil engineering principles related to traffic control devices.
    • Knowledge of construction plans and relevant regulations.
    • Capability to train and evaluate others' work.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills.

    Additional Considerations

    • Familiarity with regulations concerning roadway lighting and traffic control devices.
    • Experience with lighting design software.
    • Skills in designing and reviewing roadway lighting and traffic control plans.
    • BS in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience.
    • Professional Engineers License and EIT certification preferred.
