    Description


    All positions require that the applicant be a resident of Wyandotte county or willing to relocate within (12) months from the date of hire.

    The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City KS Public Health Department is looking for a highly motivated professional to be part of its Environmental Health Services Division for the position of Environmental Health Specialist.

    This entry-level position will protect public health and the environment by ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.

    The position is a member of a team that conducts various environmental inspections, oversees environmental remediation projects, responds to citizen complaints, oversees multi-sector permits, and conducts environmental investigations as well as other duties as required.

    Essential Job FunctionsInspects and investigates environmental health aspects of businesses, waste transport, onsite wastewater systems, swimming pools, schools, recreation, and public facilities for compliance with environmental/public health rules and regulations.

    Swimming pools
    • Inspects construction and operation of public and semi public swimming pools.

    Onsite wastewater
    • Reviews sites to determine site characteristics for onsite wastewater system design.
    Review proposed construction plans and inspect construction for compliance with approved plans.
    Waste Transport
    • Inspects liquid waste hauling vehicles.

    Maintains a high level of quality when drafting reports, internal and external communications, and any other necessary aspects of the position.

    Reviews applications and plans for compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
    Makes inspections of heating and ventilation systems, lighting, plumbing, and general sanitation of homes, businesses, and public places.
    Following investigation, determine the extent of compliance in accordance with established laws and regulations, and orders necessary corrections.
    Interprets data from an investigation of public health nuisances and makes recommendations for corrective action.

    Maintains a high level of customer service by ensuring that inquiries are answered in an efficient and courteous manner, and complaints are investigated in accordance with established priorities.

    Participates in training seminars and meetings to promote acceptance of environmental health regulations.

    Completes administrative duties by maintaining records; writing various reports; completing forms and paperwork; writing standard operating procedures; entering data into computer; writing letters and memos and issuing permits.

    Assists with the administration of various programs by developing brochures and educational materials; making various presentations, assisting in developing and writing ordinances; and presenting the department in various meetings and special events.

    Performs other duties as required.


    Qualifications:


    Bachelor's degree in environmental health, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a closely related field or, an equivalent amount of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

    Requires knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations and policies with respect to the environmental programs. Training will be provided to function in the Emergency Preparedness Threat Assessment Team. Aquatic training and certification will be provided. The position requires successful completion of all essential training and certifications by the end of their probation period. Must have reliable personal transportation and a valid KS driver's license. A background check and drug screen are conducted on potentially selected candidates. Must reside in Wyandotte County or relocate into the county within 12 months for continued employment.


    Salary Range:
    $19.15-$24.38 /hr.
