Who we are looking for
Roles and Responsibilities:
The optometrist ensures that patients see well, their eyes are healthy, identifies any early signs of disease, and alleviates any eye-related physical discomfort.
The optometrist does this through a thorough examination, developing a rapport with patients to uncover questions, concerns, and issues, interpreting diagnostic tests, and making accurate diagnosis, recommendations, and treatment plans.
- Optometrist Responsibilities _
- Conducts thorough eye examinations to assess eye health and status
- Accurately reads and interprets diagnostic tests
- Reviews patient history; notes changes or trends that affect eye health
- Verifies patient prescriptions
- Completes accurate diagnosis, prescriptions, and treatment plans
- Practices the medical model of optometry; treating first eye issues, creating treatment plans and follow up visits apart from regular/standard check ups
- Conveys education and medical knowledge necessary to patient to ensure continuing eye health and adherence to any recommended treatment
- Answers patient questions
- Conveys confidence and competence to patients
- Develops rapport with patients to assist in understanding patient lifestyle and needs related to sight and eye health (i.e. computer work, athletics, etc.) in order to best meet patient needs for optimal sight and health
- Personally transfers patients to optician; provides summary of appointment findings to optician to facilitate patient care and service
- Conducts and records complete exam in Officemate
- Reads, attends conferences, and conducts other activities to stay current on latest treatments and research
- Insurance and Billing Responsibility_
- Completely and accurately documents exams electronically (using Examwriter) with particular attention to appropriate coding and billing information
- Knowledgeable about optometry medical coding; uses appropriate codes related to exams, diagnosis and treatment plans
- Has basic knowledge of insurance plans and is able to guide patients in order to best utilize insurance for treatment plans
- Administration Responsibilities _
- Attends practice meetings as scheduled and requested
- Reads practice communications; responds as needed in a timely fashion
- Completes charts and exam notes daily
- Works collaboratively with teammates to achieve patient care and office goals
- Turns in all required documents, timesheets, and other paperwork as needed in a timely fashion
Needed Competencies:
- Excellent optometrist skills; superior diagnostic capability conveyed with warmth and professionalism
- Superior interpersonal communication skills; able to communicate with diverse patients, establishing rapport and trust;
- Sophisticated and thorough in professional practice
- Professional in appearance, demeanor, and interactions with others
- Conveys competence to patients
- Team player communicates well with the team, collaborative in accomplishing practice goals, supportive of other team members
- Technically savvy proficient in Office Mate, particularly Exam Writer
- Dependable
Education/Experience:
- Doctor of Optometry; licensed to practice in Illinois
- Maintains credentialing and stays current with continuing education requirements
- At least 2 years of practice, preferably in private practice setting
- Experience with Examwriter and OfficeMate preferred
