UCSF boasts three swimming pools across two campuses; an outdoor rooftop pool voted best outdoor pool in SF, and two indoor pools, including a deep-water pool on the Parnassus Campus.

We offer a diverse array of aquatics programming including an excellent lifeguard service, American Red Cross Learn to Swim programing and certification courses, a US Masters swim team, and a water exercise program.


  • We are looking for a passionate aquatics professional to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Aquatics Manager who is excited to lead a large and diverse group.
The Assistant Aquatics Manager will lead a team of over 50 lifeguards and will assist with supervision of other aquatics staff:
including coaches and instructors.

The Assistant Aquatics Manager will have an opportunity to develop a comprehensive recruitment, training, and professional development program for the lifeguard staff.

  • Manages the daily operations for programs such as instructional fitness, aquatics or other recreational activities. Has autonomy to analyze and resolve problems and determine appropriate action. Supervises recreation program leaders / instructors.
  • Under general supervision of the Aquatics Manager, the Assistant Aquatics Manager plans and manages facility and lifeguard operations and supports the programming units of Aquatics for both the Bakar and Millberry Fitness & Recreation Centers. The incumbent is responsible for the planning and management of the Aquatics program, coordinating staff scheduling, facility operations, managing risk and safety, and supervising staff as it relates to the identified program areas. This position performs indepth analysis and works as a team or independently to administer projects/programs and contributes to service improvements. The incumbent must be knowledgeable of current industry trends and standards; collaborate with team members to design promotions to increase member engagement and participation.
  • The focus of this job will be on the UCSF pool operations including the hiring, training, supervising, teambuilding, certification and compliance of a team of lifeguards to cover all three UCSF pools including risk management, pool maintenance, chemical balances emptying and filling of pools, compliance and certification of staff. This includes, but is not limited to, hiring, onboarding, initial training and ongoing training of staff in customer service, rescue skills, and best practices.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.


Department Description

  • Campus Life Services Fitness & Recreation inspires growth and health on the UCSF campus through fitness, community, and play. The Group Fitness unit is an integral part of Fitness & Recreation and provides customer service while ensuring participants participate in Group Fitness classes in a safe environment. The Group Fitness Instructor works under direct supervision of the Assistant Fitness Manager and is responsible for carrying out the daytoday operations of the Fitness unit, which includes customer service, creating and following lesson plans and providing quality instruction to all program participants.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • A minimum of 2 years management experience
  • Exercise expertise & training to assist customers with making safe and appropriate choices to achieve fitness goals
  • Knowledge of program activity and industry best practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.
  • Uses creative problem solving to deliver strong service orientation, program management, and sound judgment and decisionmaking; uses critical thinking skills to develop original ideas in a varied and challenging environment.
  • Client service minded focus, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skill
