Statement of Duties:


The City of Somerville's Youth Services Team seeks a
Youth Workplace Learning Coordinator to lead the development and facilitation of year-round employment and engagement opportunities for Somerville teens.

They will collaborate with City departments to design and lead a series of Youth Employment Cohorts for the City of Somerville's Mayor's Summer Jobs Program.

During the school year, the Coordinator will be responsible for facilitating year-round youth employment and development positions in collaboration with city departments and local partners.


The Youth Workplace learning Coordinator will be a member of the city's Youth Services Team, a newly established division within the Health and Human Services Department that promotes and fosters the development of resilient, prepared, and engaged Somerville teens.


Essential Functions:

  • Develop and facilitate workbased learning curriculum for Summer Jobs Program participant cohorts, beginning with a Climate Justice cohort of the 2024 season.
  • Communicate with Somerville Public Schools, City departments, and external partners to identify specialized teen employment projects for teen participants and oversee placements.
  • Facilitate developmental group experiences and individual checkins with teen participants.
  • Develop new programs based on the recommendations of an ongoing needs assessment and Youth Services Team strategic planning.
  • Manage the development of new collaborative initiatives in response to ongoing needs assessment related to Youth Services in Somerville.
  • Lead a team of interns/part time employees facilitating youth learning opportunities.
  • Recruit youth for yearround engagement and employment opportunities
  • Collaborate with city departments to design creative schoolyear job placements for teen employees.
  • Provide ongoing career exploration and support to teen participants throughout the school year.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:


Education and Experience:

Associate Degree in social sciences, education, human services or related field, and three to five (3-5) years' experience in youth work/direct services; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.


Preferred Requirements

  • Multilingual skills in Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian-Creole, Mandarin, and/or Nepali.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skill:


Knowledge:


  • Understanding of Positive Youth Development approach and best practices for Youth Employment
  • Strong understanding of, and experience with, workbased learning environments and curriculum development
  • Knowledge of tools and practices to ensure physical and emotional safety for teens in a work environment.

Ability:


  • Ability to collaborate intentionally and anticipate competing needs of multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience creating space for youthled dialogue.
  • Ability to execute time management and prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and facilitation.
  • Ability to coordinate and lead a team of program coordinators.

Skill:


  • Enthusiasm for working with teens and for working collaboratively.
  • Driven to take initiative and demonstrate flexibility and creative problem solving.

Work Environment:

The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of offices, with occasional exposure to outside elements. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant.

Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours in response to attend evening meetings or complete work assignments.

Frequently attends meetings and events throughout the City, at times in inclement weather.

Physical Skills
Few physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing.
