Job Overview

The Cafeteria Specialist Substitute, under direct supervision, is responsible for preparing appropriate quantities of food to meet the menu requirements and maintain high standards of quality in food production, sanitation, and safety practices.

The incumbent will promote an atmosphere which reflects efficiency, cleanliness and friendliness.

Position Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare quality food according to a planned menu using tested or standardized recipes
  • Receive food and nonfood deliveries and be responsible for the storage and care of food items and supplies
  • Maintain a clean and organized storage and work area
  • Demonstrate knowledge and follow manufacturer guidelines for care and use of equipment
  • Maintain sanitary working conditions to eliminate cross contamination
  • Meet all scheduled meal times and serves the food as per departmental policies and procedures

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Texas Food Handler's Certificate Ability to obtain a Food Handler's Certification within 14 days of employment
  • Reliable transportation to various work locations
  • Ability to work with students and staff cooperatively
  • Ability to obtain a Food Handler's Certification within 14 days of employment
  • Ability to speak, read, write and follow written and oral instructions in English
  • Basic math skills, computer skills, and ability to work with currency in a quick and accurate manner
  • Experience in food service, preferred

The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials.

The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.


Additional Information

  • Frequent manual dexterity is required to perform lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling tasks described previously, in addition to preparing food dishes with or without utensils, adjusting thermostats on ovens and grills, washing pots and pans, and cleaning, wiping counters, sweeping, and mopping. Frequent reaching from side to side up to arm's length while preparing and serving food or performing cleaning activities is required. An incumbent must be able to reach over head up to 86 1⁄2" from floor stored items in the storage room using appropriate equipment such as step ladders. Work requires continual walking and standing while performing essential functions. Occasional bending, stooping, and squatting is required to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of items from as low as 11 1⁄2" or when kneeling down to clean lower level ovens, clean base boards, and floors. Vision is essential for tasks involving eye hand coordination including carving, cutting, serving, and portioning food on trays, in addition to being able to tell when food dishes are properly cooked. Vision is also essential for reading recipes and safety instructions. Work requires exposure to extreme hot and/or cold temperatures from steamers and freezers and the hazards associated with food tipping or spilling off of food and utility carts and dollies. Incumbents are also exposed to hazards associated with cleaning chemicals.
  • This position does not have a permanent work location. The employee is required to work where the staffing demand is needed.
