    Primary Purpose:
    To interpret communication and provide equal access between the deaf and hard of hearing students/staff and hearing teachers, students and staff. Assist the program coordinator with scheduling staff interpreters. Act as a resource for educating teachers and administration as it relates to interpreting services. Develops and maintains procedures as it relates to assessing and evaluating staff interpreters' job performance. Supervise the professional development of staff interpreters and supervise and coordinate student interns from interpreter training programs.

    Qualifications:
    Education/Certification:
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, Master's preferred
    Certification from the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitation Services (DARS) or The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)

    Special Knowledge/Skills:
    Knowledge of computer and software applications
    Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
    Ability to communicate effectively through written, oral and American Sign Language

    Experience
    Four years experience as a sign language interpreter working with deaf or hard of hearing individuals.

    Major Responsibilities and Duties:
    Interpreting:
    1. Render the message, always conveying the content and spirit of the speaker using language most readily understood by the student. This requires interpreters to know different sign language systems and to be able to adjust communication levels. Make sign and finger spelling precise and clear.
    2. Study or prepare for class appropriately by meeting with instructor, reading lecture outlines, skimming required readings in textbooks, previewing uncaptioned instructional videotapes, researching/studying specialized instructional vocabulary, and preparing tutoring materials.
    3. Relay any unusual problems to the classroom teacher or Deaf Ed teacher.
    4. Seek to improve sign language skills and improve level of competency. Participate in professional development workshops whenever possible in order to maintain certification and improve job performance.
    5. Maintain confidentiality and report necessary student information only to appropriate school district personnel (deaf education teachers, mainstream teachers, campus administrators, Waco Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (WRDSPD) administrators).
    6. Provide the best possible setting for the student who is deaf or hard of hearing through proper dress, placement, distance and lighting.
    7. Attend meetings as needed with appropriate members of the educational team.
    8. Assist in providing orientation to deafness for general education staff and students. Has a general knowledge of deaf culture.
    9. Follow the Code of Ethics for Interpreters as established and mandated by RID, BEI, EIPA
    10. Comply with the Waco Independent School District's and the Waco Regional Day School Program for the Deaf philosophy, policies and procedures
    11. Perform other duties related to Special Education as assigned.
    Supervisory:
    1. Assist the program coordinator in coordinating schedules of staff and substitute interpreters. Coordinate special assignments for staff and contract interpreters as needed.
    2. Insure that interpreter schedules are being maintained.
    3. Assign interpreter job tasks for the day in the event the student is absent.
    4. Mediates between student and interpreter, as needed to resolve problems.
    5. Assist the Coordinator in hiring of new interpreters and keeps interpreters informed on current policies and procedures.
    6. Works with the program coordinator in maintaining and developing policies, procedures and changes in operations as it relates to assessing and evaluating staff interpreters' job performance and professional development annually.
    7. Conduct monthly staff meetings with interpreters to ensure consistency with procedures and standard practices.
    8. Acts as resource for educating teachers, administrators and interpreters as it relates to interpreting services and Deaf Culture.
    9. Cooperates with faculty to address the special needs of students who are deaf and hard-of hearing.
    10. Advises program coordinator of matters of concern with regard to instructors, students or interpreters.
    11. Assist the program coordinator in planning basic sign language classes and act as a resource for parents, students and staff needing to learn sign language or improve existing skills.
    12. Assist in coordinating internship programs for local college/university interpreting program students including screening students and developing procedures for interns.
    13. Insure that the interpreting staff complies with the RID CPC and EIPA concerning general and educational interpreting competencies.
    14. Brief substitute interpreter of pertinent information such as communication accommodations and specialized vocabulary as it relates to the on-going class in the event that the staff interpreter is absent.
    15. Attend ARD meetings as the interpreter representative as required.

    Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular district wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; moderate lifting and carrying. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.
