Young Advocate (East County Outdoor Opportunities Specialist)

At IPS we know that public health issues can inequitably impact our regions' most vulnerable communities. Therefore, we strive to enact upstream prevention strategies to address the underlying issues that impact physical and mental health.

Through a multi-faceted approach to achieving equity that includes media advocacy, community organizing, policy, and systems change, we can transform the communities we serve.


As a member of our Young Advocates program, you will create lasting change in communities by leading youth in impactful outdoor and cultural activities and experiences.

The goal of the East County Outdoor Opportunities Program is to assist low-income and disadvantaged youth to: achieve improved physical and mental health, identify alternatives for drug and alcohol use, reduce social isolation, and decrease dependency on screens for stimulation by connecting and engaging with the natural world.

As a Young Advocate with an
outdoor opportunity emphasis, you may engage in:

  • Assist in the planning and facilitation of outdoor activities and presentations on natural and cultural topics for youth participants.
  • Attend program meetings and interacting with staff, youth, guardians, community members, and professionals.
  • Assist in measuring youth involvement and program impact.
  • Help to develop and maintain relationships with outside organizations.
  • Help to organize and host community engagement events.
  • Assist in social media development.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
years old, or 18 and graduated from high school.

  • Experience working with youth.
  • Experience in or knowledge of recreation, outdoor education, natural sciences, public health or related field.
  • Capable of attending inperson and virtual meetings.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Available to work in the East Region of San Diego.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments, including day and overnight trips.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Available for at least six months.
  • Available to attend monthly meetings, day & overnight trips.
  • Successful completion of background check and drug screen.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Capable of working with diverse populations.
  • Lived experiences.
  • Experience leading outdoor recreation activities.
  • Experience facilitating presentations.
  • Familiarity with youthled participatory action research model.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Lifeguard, EMT, or Wilderness First Aid certification.
  • Bilingual capacity.
