Summary: Under limited supervision, the Biomedical Equipment Technician protects patients and staff by providing service support for medical equipment and medical computer systems. They manage risks associated with therapeutic, diagnostic, treatment, and monitoring medical devices. The role involves conducting performance risk assessments, safety inspections, and preventative maintenance, complying with regulatory agencies like the Joint Commission. Additionally, they participate in processes for the management of medical equipment acquisition, implementation, maintenance, upgrades, and replacement. The Technician evaluates medical equipment for preventive maintenance processes, including manufacture and alternate equipment management procedures as required by regulatory agencies. Troubleshooting and repairing biomedical equipment requires knowledge of communications (wired and wireless) and network performance. Emergency on-call duties are also part of the job.
Education: The ideal candidate should possess an Associates Degree (A.A.) from a two-year college, university, or technical school in electronics engineering technology, biomedical equipment technology, or Information Technology. The education must cover electronics and electrical theory, computer software, hardware, networking, mathematics (including primary algebra), and the ability to read technical manuals and interpret schematic diagrams.
Licensure/Certification: Preferred certifications include A+ (Computer hardware/software), Network +, and others. Desirable but not required certifications are Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES), or Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES). A valid driver's license may be necessary for driving between sites.
Experience: The role requires a minimum of 4 years of experience in Biomedical/Clinical Engineering. Experience with computer software, hardware, networking, and Microsoft Office applications is beneficial. Candidates should have knowledge of various operating systems, including Microsoft and UNIX. Technical expertise in a wide range of medical equipment, understanding of equipment operation, design, troubleshooting, and wired/wireless networking is preferred. Good verbal, written, and graphical communication skills are essential. The ability to lift/handle 75 lbs may be necessary, and driving between worksites using hospital-owned or personally owned vehicles may be required.
