About NASA High School Aerospace Scholars:

NASA High School Aerospace Scholars, or HAS, is an interactive online learning experience highlighted by a week-long engineering design challenge.

Selected students are encouraged to study mathematics, science, engineering, and technology by interacting with engineers at NASA's Johnson Space Center.

The project includes preliminary interactive web-based activities, distance learning, and a residential experience during the summer at Johnson. From across the state of Texas, students are nominated to participate by their state legislator through a competitive process. Selected students are Texas residents and U.S.

citizens currently in their junior year of high school (rising seniors) with an interest and aptitude for mathematics, science, engineering, or technology.


Lead Counselors are responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations during a NASA onsite STEM experience for rising high school seniors at Johnson Space Center (JSC), including activities off site.

The Lead Counselor will report to NASA's HAS Education Coordinators and:


  • Direct and mentor a team of up to four counselors (also Texas certified teachers) while promoting a positive work environment, encouraging cooperation, collaboration, and coownership of success.
  • Provide guidance and leadership for counselors to effectively engage and support their student teams in all program activities throughout the week resulting in a challenging and engaging STEM experience that exceeds the expectations of NASA, its students, and their families.
  • Provide guidance and leadership for counselors to work in a safe manner and to use time, equipment, and resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Become familiar with and help monitor and enforce all program rules and regulations while exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and professional manner.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and calm to adapt positively or take on additional responsibilities when changes in circumstances occur.
  • Communicate frequently, honestly, and openly with HAS team members, listen attentively, and assume responsibility for resolving difficulties appropriately; and
  • Foster relationships among HAS counselors and students in which all individuals are valued, appreciated, and included while actively endorsing and supporting NASA's and Guardians of Honor's mission.

Compensation:

The compensation for this opportunity is $1000 per week. Cost of transportation, lodging, and food paid for by program contract employment)

Degree:

Bachelor's Degree, Masters preferred


Certifications, Registrations, or Licenses:

Valid Texas Teaching Certification required.


Must be certified in and reside in the state of Texas.

Field of Study:

Education or Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics Education


Experience:

Three years successful classroom teaching experience in grades K-12 or college level required. One year leadership experience such as coaching, mentoring other teachers, chairing a department or school-wide initiative, etc. preferred.
