Duties:


As a Security Specialist, you will:

  • Review, analyze, and asses proposed orders, plans and guidelines relative to the safeguards and security efforts to determine requirements and the impact on current or planned Department of Energy Operations.
  • Identify training requirements to meet Departmental and National policy objectives of safeguarding classified information, nuclear material, conduct of inspections/surveys, assessments and inspection of organization and contractor facilities, and equipment.
  • Identify the weaknesses and strengths in protection strategies; and provide consultation regarding physical security protection matters with Departmental elements and with other federal/state/tribal/international organizations.
  • Provide input as required regarding policy aspects of field surveys, external assessments, and/or security plans and selfassessments.
  • Perform research and assists in preparing recommendations to improve the capability of the Safeguards and Security Policy in developing accurate threat assessments of malevolent activity directed against Departmental assets.
  • Coordinate all personnel and physical security activities for the Program Office, including coordinating security requests, reviewing requests for security clearances and special access, evaluating sensitivity determination for positions, and negotiating means for reducing risk.
  • Coordinate inspections of computers, copiers, rooms, and storage rooms for accreditation to manage classified documents.
  • Collaborate with classified information systems support personnel to ensure that the organization's classified computer security and classified copier programs are fully implemented.

Requirements:


Conditions of Employment:


  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • This employer participates in the eVerify program.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Subject to satisfactory security and suitability requirements.
  • May be required to successfully complete a 1year probationary period.
  • This position does not support 100% remote work. You will be required to report physically to the official reporting worksite as specified by the supervisor, but no less than 2 days per pay period.
  • A preliminary background check must be completed before a new employee can begin work. Current Federal employees or other individuals with an existing completed background investigation may not be required to undergo another background check.
  • This position has been designated as Tier 5 and requires a security clearance at the Q level. The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain this clearance level; failure to do so may result in separation from federal service.

Qualifications:


  • Reviewing, analyzing, and resolving difficult and complex security problems related to badges, clearances, and foreign visit and assignments.
  • Interpreting new and conflicting policy guidelines to ensure internal organization procedures are being implemented based on best practices.
  • Implementing security programs involving the coordination between a wide variety of organizations of varying mission requirements.
"Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience.

Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include:

volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
